I have been getting around 4 to 5 hours of sleep for the past week or so. At work today I felt pretty anxious and almost was on the verge of a sudden panic attack. Is this related to lack or quality of sleep that Im getting ? Cause before that I was pretty fine and happy. Please Advise.

Yes, you should definately get some more sleep. Lack of sleep means your body and mind are less able to cope the everyday strains of living.

Also, (you probably know this already) make sure you breathe properly. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.

Good luck! Hope you feel better soon!

I normally have social anxiety - to the point I leave my house only once a week or every other week...

so maybe I am not the person to answer....

but I do know my own symptoms greatly increase with a lack of sleep.

...Sleep also plays a role. Lack of sleep has been shown to increase the body’s stress hormone levels. Did you know that a person will die quicker from a lack of sleep than from a lack of food? Good sleep habits are vital for good health. Click here for more information about sleep.

Panic and anxiety all relate to sleep dissorders. If you go to bed of a night you should try and relax and unwind.Tiredness can also cause alot of anxiety. If you have been under more stress than the normal that could be causing you to be anxious and panicky also. You should also have a talk to the dr.about the problem.

You are really talking about a cause and effect here. Anxiety can cause sleeplessness and sleeplessness can cause anxiety. Even the answer to your question/solution to your problem is a complicated one at best. Any number of things can be causing anxiety and/or lack of sleep. My advice is to see your family doctor and let him give you a full physical and then get referred to see a good psychiatrist/psychologist. The two of them really work well hand in hand as one is treating your brain and one is treating your mind.

Over the counter and/or herbals, there are a few things you can do. Drinking passion flower tea can be conducive to relaxation and sleep as can smoking lettuce opium (wild lettuce) and/or taking Valerian root. I would talk to a doctor about these alternative therapies with your doctor, though. All herbal solutions can carry their own risk, so talk to your doctor. And good night!
