Before I post my response and get you upset. I once too thought it would be Moses and Elijah. I taught the stuff in Sunday School. I was highly educated on the Rapture, 7 years tribulation, 666, wormwood, the rebuilding of the Temple and so on. Then I started learning about Dispensationalism. I learned about John Nelson Darby and Cyrus Scofield. I started really reading the Bible with Comprehension. The first thing I saw is that under Jesus Christ there is no dual covenant. Salvation through Jesus Christ has been and will continue to be for the Jews and the Gentiles. So guess what? That means the Jews are not special any more. Ah that really changes the way I view things. Then I got to studying more. Pre-tribulation rapture...not Biblical. Bringing the Jews back to Israel before Jesus comes back...not Biblical. So basically my response is that the Left Behind Tim LaHaye books have it all wrong.

The 1260 prophetic days are 1260 literal years.
The Papacy ruled Europe from 538 AD till 1798 AD when the political power was taken away by Napoleon. But the deadly wound is being healed. Mussolini gave the Papacy back its political power in the 20's.
The Papacy is the Antichrist.
The 2 witnesses are the old and new testaments. During the French revolution the people did away with God and destroyed all the bibles. Burnt them in the streets. They instituted the Goddess of reason.
They, the Bible lay dead in the streets, so to speak but after 3 years the country was in such a mess that the French government brought back the Bible and the worship of God.
These two witnesses are the 2 testaments of God.

Most people think Elijah is one of them. The most popular guess for the other is Moses. Some people think Enoch because he like Elijah did not die. However the Bible doesn't say. It's possible that the two witnesses will be two people who just happen to be alive at that time, not just someone from the past that we have heard of from the Bible.

there's a few diff schools of thought. Most fall into one of two camps: allegory or literal witnesses.

Allegorical teachers say the OT and NT are the two witnesses.

Although I have issues with some of the Pre-Mil camp, I have to fall on the side of Moses and Elijah.

The were both taken out before death, and the apostles say they saw them on the Mt of Transfig.

So, I'm falling on that side.
