The Romans for the most part seem to have been wine-drinkers, and it makes sense--Italy is pretty good wine grape country. Rome also controlled much of the Mediterranean areas and could probably have their choice of the best grapes from Gaul (France), Spain and the rest of the area.

They may have dabbled in beer, which was popular in Egypt.
