I've been on an Eastern Caribbean and Mexican Riviera cruise. The Caribbean cruise stopped in the Bahamas, St Thomas and St Maarten and the MExican cruise in Cabo, Mazatlan and Puerto vallarta. I much prefered the Caribbean. So I am thinking of going on a cruise in the western caribbean, stops in Jamaica, cayman island and cozumel. My Question is, is the western caribbean more like the eastern caribbean or mexico??
thanks very much!

I have been to both Eastern and Western Caribbean and the Mexico cruises. It was my experience that the beaches on the Caribbean side of Mexico are much prettier than those on the Pacific side. And the port stops in the Western Caribbean in my opinion are much better. Cozumel is a rather small island with not much to do other than beach stuff. Its the place for swim, snorkel and scuba, plus para-sail, jet ski, etc. There is some shopping, but not like you will find in St Thomas. Grand Cayman has that 7-mile beach which is lovely and prettier than any beach on the Pacific side of Mexico. Jamaica is not a stop that I care for in the Western Caribbean, but I did enjoy the river raft trip and the Dunn's Falls excursions on my stops there.

Yes go to the Western Caribbean as its a different experience.

I have taken at least one cruise every year for the last ten years. I have been to both the eastern and western carribean, and the mexican riviera. I can honestly say that if you liked the eastern carribean then I would most definately go on the western carribean. I have been on the western carribean about five times and jamaica, grand caymen, and cozumel are three of my most favorite stops in all of the carribean. Those are the three places that you will be able to have the greatest experiences.

In my opinion, the Western Caribbean is better. I really like the port of Grand Cayman and the excursion to "Swim with the Stingrays". It is the neatest adventure you have ever experienced. It is 100% safe.

I also like Cozumel to go to Chakkanaab Park for their excellent snorkeling. Crystal clear water and lots of fish.

Jamaica must be done with a tour. The crime rate there is unbelievably high. Drink some Red Stripe beer, eat some jerk chicken or port, stay with your group and you will have a good time.

Western and Eastern both can be fun. But, of the two itineraries you list, I'd definitely go with the Western. Bahamas is not that great; St. Thomas is often mobbed with cruise ships [although if you go over to St. John, that's always nice!]; I wasn't that impressed with St. Maarten. On the other hand, Coz can also be mobbed with ships; Belize is a [long] tender port; Costa Maya is a cruise-company "artificial" port, although most people go into the little "fishing" village nearby. Not much to do there and you have to put up with the hawkers constantly bothering you [although not as bad as in Jamaica!]. Roatan is nice, but it's a ways from MB to West Bay.

For your safety please avoid Jamaica, they have been having lots of problems there, and most recently a group on a carnival cruise got held at gunpoint, in Montego Bay. I think that they are all different and no matter where you go that you are going to have a great time. I love Eastern the best though, and I have been all over. So you might want to consider southern Caribbean, as that might be a good alternative, and its alot of fun.

I know many people think Yahoo answere is the best place to get all information, in this case it is not. I would recomend you check out cruisecritic.com for your crusing info. I have only done the Mexican cruise in Cabo, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta
