i have a beautiful 3-year-old niece that i see quite often, like every couple weeks. and everytime i visit my sister to help with something or to drop something off, i see my niece who runs and gives me a big hug and says something cute. there were a few years that i was not able to see her because of my living quarters (i was in johnstown, pa going to school and she lives in wheatland, pa. its a 3 hour trip both ways). anyways, i ask her to point to her mother when i say 'wheres mommy?'. she points to her and says 'mommy'. i do the same thing with her two brothers (ages 14 years and 11 months), again she points and says their names. the same with ehr father, babysitter, and grandmother. shell seldom say my girlfriends name. in all her life, i think shes only mentioned my name 5 times. when i ask her who i am or whats my name, she draws a blank. usually it results in me telling her.

yes i know it seems like im whining, lol, but what do i do?

It is easier for to pick up on names of people that she sees from a day to day basis. Just keep asking her can you say....or what's my name? It would probably help more if the mother or father would say 'Do you know who that is?' and point to you. That way someone else is teaching her who you are and what to call you. My poor kids are going to be so confused later on. They have and Auntie Kari from my side of the family, and Auntie Kerri from my husband's side of the family and also an Auntie Kelly. Plus I have an Aunt Keri. Kelly usually comes out sounding like Kerri since my kids can't annunciate their L's and she gets really offended b/c she thinks they are calling her the wrong name. And on top of all of the Kerri's, there is an Auntie Alisha and an Auntie Linda which are constantly getting confused with each other and sound the same when spoken by a 2 year old. And we've added an Auntie Ashley to the mix (just to be mean.)

Oddly enough though, it was grandma that the kids could never get right. For some reason, and I have no idea how they even came up with this name, they have always called Grandma 'Muncle'. (Her name is Pam so really, they pulled this out of a hat or something)

it may just be hard for her to say or she feels like she says it wrong. there are allot of aunts that have weird nicknames bc the child cant say there name. i now a lady who was aunt boo i have a friend who's name is Kim and she is aunt Timmy or Tammy because the kids couldn't say Kim or Kimmy. my moms little brother calls her cheech because he couldn't say Teresa, maybe it came from trese. try to help her come up with a cute name.

shes only 3! how many names is she expected to remember? why not just tell her when ur with her and encourage her when she remembers while ur there. remember the center of her universe is her nuclear family and so long as she remembers those thats enough for that little mind that wakes up and each day is new.
