I think knowing a second or third language is great, however, we are in the USA and the language is English. Anybody living here needs to know English. It is also a matter of safety, why do people who cant speak English get drivers licences? If they cant speak English how the heck can they read the signs on the road. How about medical emergencies when the Dr or medical personnel cant speak their language, makes it awfully hard to figure out whats wrong. I shouldnt be forced to know another language when I am a citizen of this country.

I can understand Spanish but I can't speak it fluently. And I am always amazed when people say that immigrants should 'just learn English'. They seem to think that it should be easy to just learn a new language. And to that I want to say, 'Just learn Spanish' if its no big deal.

I can't imagine even visiting another country and trying to figure out how to get basic information over the phone in French or Chinese. It would be very confusing and frustrating.

Learning the counties main language should be an immigrants main goal, but until they can be fully fluent, why not have menu options that can help get them to people who can understand them.

i'm getting fairly aggravated as quickly as I would desire to press 2 for English. it form of sounds like continuously that our guidance manuals have been in 3 languages: English, French, and Spanish. i've got seen some packaging with different languages on them, too. however the popular printing replaced into in English. It replaced into enormously startling the 1st time I had to compliment English on the telephone. oftentimes i'm getting surveys the place I would desire to request the two English or Spanish. i'm getting used to it.

I think it's really annoying and generally a waste of my time. If they MUST play the message in spanish, why not give the english speakers the chance to push something BEFORE they give the whole message in spanish. I really don't want to hear it...

I am one that would not go into another country that is not English speaking and assume that everyone in that country should know my language. If you go to another country, you learn that language especially if you are planning on living there. The language in this country is English. And I am against bending over backwards for language barriers.

I have no real problems with companies doing it. Their job is to make money, and they're reaching out to potential customers.

It's the government allowing immigrants to not learn English by providing documents in Spanish that BS.

How about 3 for chinese manderin, 4 for chinese cantonese, 5 for japanese, 6 for korean, 7 for tagalog, 8 for hindi etc etc...

Point is how can a nation be sustained if it's becoming a tower of Babel. ENGLISH ONLY!

This question problably can be tided up to immigrants, which lead me to think this:

The problem I have with ANY immigrant, legal or illegal, is when they do NOT assimilate into the American culture, like many are doing today, and persist in doing most of their things their way, and even including starting to change our culture to theirs.

no!

I think that that person/s made the choice (for whatever reason) to leave their country and come live in this one, they have to realize that they have to give up part of that live they had in their country, the culture, the way of doing things, etc, that's the price you pay by chosing not living in your country anymore and coming to live in this one.

Most of all the countries in the world demand that of their immigrants, to learn the language, to assimilate into their culture and way of doing things, etc, NOT to continue living in a parallel culture to the main culture inside their country, ex: if you go to live in Mexico you must learn Spanish, if you go to live in Japan you have to learn Japanese, etc etc etc...

that is my biggest problem with immigrants, otherwise if they are willing to become Americanized they are ok with me.
