Do you have a stable work history? Good income? Do you pay your bills on time?

Being an authorized user on someone else's card does nothing for your credit record.

Being an authorized user on someone else's credit card does not build your credit whatsoever. All it means is that you're authorized to use it. They didn't take down your ssn# or employer information, or anything other than your name for you to be listed as an authorized user. The only way you can get a credit card of your own is to have your credit checked and to give your ssn# and income information.

So many places want you to take their credit card. Go to some clothing store and they will cram one down your throat. It will have a very small limit but as you use it and pay it off, the limit will increase. Now you have established credit. Or just apply and they will give you one with a ridiculous interest rate. Be careful what you get and pay it off each month. They can and will increase your interest rate outrageously-1 because they can and when they want, 2. if you are late. Be sure to pay on time and don't get in over your head. Don't use for long-term investments. Best to pay off monthly.

If you are over 18 and have a decent income you should have a good chance of getting approved for an unsecured card.

Gas cards are usually easiest to get. Need to buy gas for vehicle anyway. Pay bill off every month. Then try for other kinds of cards.
