We don't fully understand what causes canker sores. I have heard of things like stress, citrus, medications and even sunlight. But there is just no way of saying for sure. Most likely it is somehow related to a persons immune system and their individual body chemistry.

Sorry DrAcidBath you are confusing Apthous Ulcers or canker sores with Cold sores cause by Herpes. But thanks for trying. And sorry prjkvaxc but apthous ulcers or canker sores are not caused by malalignment of teeth, you may be thinking of an Irritation Fibroma.

A canker sore is not an apthous ulcer... Apthous ulcers occur in the mouth on the inner aspect of lips, cheek, tongue, and sometimes the throat and palate. Canker sores are typically associated with the Herpes virus--not the genital variety however. These sore occur on the exterior lip.

Apthous ulcers are typically brought on by stress. Sometimes certain foods can be implicated. Once a person gets them, the ulcers with recurr in clusters randomly/sporadically/unpredictably over time. The only treatment is to provide pain relief via numbing agents--either benzocaine or viscous lidocaine 2%. The ulcers will typically last 5-10 days from their onset.

Immune supression likely exacerbates the problem...

Sorry and good luck.
