Karen Armstrong said it very well:

"It seems pointless to make a commitment unless we are convinced about the essentials. In our modern, scientific world, this makes good, rational sense: First you establish a principle, and then you apply it.

But the history of religion makes it clear that this is not how it works. To expect to have faith before embarking on the disciplines of the spiritual life is like putting the cart before the horse. In all the great traditions, prophets, sages, and mystic spend very little time telling their disciples what they ought to believe...

All the great teachers of spirituality in all the major traditions have insisted that before you can have faith, you must live in a certain way. You must lead a compassionate life, transcending the demands of the clamorous ego and recognizing the sacred in others; you must perform rituals (often enshrined in religious law) that make even the most mundane detail of our lives an encounter with the ultimate; all traditions insist that you must also pray. Prayer is thus not born of belief and intellectual conviction; it is a practise *that creates faith*"

If you’re a good person, everyone can tell. If you’re just trying to push some stupid ancient argument down people’s throats then people will not get the same vibe.

I think Paul referred to it as endless genealogies.

All the stupid stuff, like Bible thumpers throwing stuff at people entering an abortion clinic, even though the person getting the abortion is in dire danger because the fetus has formed around her IUD.

That’s the kind of behavior that if there were a God he’d damn the “by the book Christians” to hell on the spot for.

But this goes for all of the over aggressive middle eastern religions, not just Christianity. I can't remember the Buddhist or Hindus ever intentionally starting a war for religious reasons.

Sadly such a God doesn’t exist and if something similar did exist I’d have to hold him accountable for a great many injustices humanity has suffered at the hands of his “people.”

Perhaps such a God is there but hiding his face from humanity in shame for the way his people pretend to suffer at the hands of the world while blocking every step of progress the more enlightened people have made.

Words are just wind. Actions convey true meaning. I can walk up to a homeless guy with a sign asking for help and say "Are you hungry, I'm really sorry for you" or I can pick up a couple of extras at the store, and hand them to a hungry person. No words required.

Be the change you want to see in the world.

As a Christian, I agree with this statement.

When we get into the practice of regular time with God, prayer, prayerfully studying scripture, understanding grows. We find peace and guidance.

We can’t build a relationship with God based on theory. We must spend time with Him every day.

We can’t reach God through reason or science. Faith is the only key. As we spend more and more time God-focused, we find that faith is strengthened and becomes unshakable trust.

You can theorize all day long, but that doesn't benefit you or the church. In practice, you are implementing the ideas of the theories to do good for yourself and others.

Gotta answer those questions before your next class?

Urgent, like your exam question is due tomorrow...geez

Another quality education begged for on the net.

The theory is you should do your own work and stop getting people to do it for you (in practice).

Who do you know obeys these scriptures?
(Matthew 28:19-20) Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU. And, look! I am with YOU all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.”

(Acts 5:42) And every day in the temple and from house to house they continued without letup teaching and declaring the good news about the Christ, Jesus.

(Acts 20:20) while I did not hold back from telling YOU any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching YOU publicly and from house to house.

(John 5:19) Therefore, in answer, Jesus went on to say to them: “Most truly I say to YOU, The Son cannot do a single thing of his own initiative, but only what he beholds the Father doing. For whatever things that One does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

(Exodus 6:3) And I used to appear to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as God Almighty, but as respects my name Jehovah I did not make myself known to them.
(Luke 10:16) “He that listens to YOU listens to me [too]. And he that disregards YOU disregards me [too]. Moreover, he that disregards me disregards [also] him that sent me forth.”

Who [?] sent Jesus forth??

You must know for facts and the only way you will know is if you read the bible. No one can tell you, if you really want to know you must learn about it for yourself. I believe in god but I don't go to church, I don't think that in order to have faith and believe you must be in a specific location at a certain time. God should be in you heart and soul wherever you go and if you believe in him you already have you answers. Go to church if you feel the need to and read don't let other people make up your mind and tell you what you should believe.

You need to act out what you believe

Walk the walk not just talk the talk..
Lots of cliches but that is what that means...

You can believe what you want but if it doesn't outwork in your life it is just theories.

It means it doesn't do any good to think and study about religion if you don't believe or have faith. Don't try to prove there is or isn't a god just have faith, and live a good life.
