Jesus’ ministry brought divisions, even within families (Read Luke 12:51-53), but it was because of his adherence to, and proclamation of, God’s righteous standards and truth. Division resulted because many individuals hardened their hearts against these truths while others accepted them. (Read John 8:40, 44-47; 15:22-25; 17:14) This was unavoidable if the divine principles were to be upheld; but the blame lay with the rejecters of what was right.
So, too, enmity was foretold to come because God’s perfect standards would allow for no condoning of the rebellious course of Satan’s “seed.” God’s disapproval of such ones and his blessing of those holding to a righteous course would have a divisive effect (John 15:18-21; James 4:4), even as in the case of Cain and Abel.—Genesis 4:2-8; Hebrew 11:4; 1John 3:12; Jude 10, 11

It is a difficult passage. It does NOT mean Jesus was sponsoring war or family feuds. By "bringing a sword", Jesus meant that his message was to make a difference in the world, a difference that was likely to upset one's close friends, even family.
Ideally, families are nurturing and supportive, places where you can truly be yourself. But families can also be traps, pressure cookers, institutions that expect you to behave a certain way and require you to do things you may not agree with. Families also, by nature, tend to favor their own members to the neglect of others. That's why nepotism is considered a bad practice in business and government.
Jesus did not say to love him more than your family. He said you can't let your feelings for your family keep you from following him. It's far too easy to allow family obligations and expectations to prevent you from effectively loving your neighbor, loving your enemy, feeding the hungry, comforting the suffering, giving your money to the poor, speaking up for the oppressed.
It's great when families agree on the importance of Christian action, but if a family member thinks you are spending too much time, energy and resources on other people, they could become jealous and work to undermine you with guilt, stress or worse. That's where the fighting comes in. Jesus is recognizing that true Christian living can create enemies out of those who don't understand and feel threatened by a wider perspective. But if you can harmonize your family life and your Christian duty to build up the kingdom of heaven in the world, there's no need for "swords".
It should have been clearer. It certainly got people's attention.

It is very easy to take a verse out of context and use it to justify just about anything. Lots of groups (i.e. Nazis, white suprimasists, nostics, even the catholic church itself back in the middle ages, etc.) have done so to the detriment of everyone. The verses you just listed are interpretted in a number of different ways. The most common of which is that belief in Christianity and Jesus will lead to conflict. Is that really such a surprising thing? Read the posts on Religion/Philosophy channel some time. It's nothing BUT conflict.
Jesus is not saying in that verse that we take up swords and start hacking up non believers, just that we should not be surprised when our beliefs put us into conflicts with those around us and even with those closest to us. Also he meant to say that His kingdom would not be an earthly kingdom. He did not come to bring earthly, but spiritual peace. You have to take into consideration what the rest of the book says, before deciding what one particular passage means.

He says this because he knows that some people can't put God above their personal interests or their fleshly family members. People tend to be more loyal to family members above all while some who study the bible and realize what is required of them will put God and his standards first in their lives. When this becomes evident to family members, they get offended! It's just dumb sinful tendency! That's one of the reasons there are so many denominations out there. Family members want to worship together but disagree on interpretation of the bible, so they have to form a new church to make everyone happy. It doesn't work that way! People need to think with a view to the spirit, not with a view to the flesh! He doesn't want to break families up- he's merely warning us that this is what's going to happen because of some who have stubborn pride along with priorities and loyalties out of whack! Keep studying the bible and it will make perfect sense to you in time. Don't give up!

atheists and evangelists makes so many lies about muslims just wanted to warn you of that since you are studying stuff-by the way do you really think there can be peace on an earth full of ppl who beleive in nothing and dont fear a punishment for wrongdoing?I am not christian but i can see the meaning of these verses-you know ppl were leaving thier old religions for christianity thus setting family members against one another-obviously this other one to love him more than your parents, its like love his WAY ie not worshipping idols like the parents but following Jesus and letting no one turn you away from whats right-this is like moot anywho b.c. Paul and the church totally turned christianity into a paganistic thing anyways

Well you read only this part but did you continue reading the rest?
FIRST the Quraan is not holy and not from God!!!!
Only the Bible is from God
SECOND: continue reading and you'll find what God meant by this!! Also when you continue you'll find that Jesus will save the world from the sin!!
But He is right that He didn't come to give peace for the world but the hearts of the people
So don't read a little part and leave the rest

Maybe you should attend an "Effective Speech Maker" course ? I'm sure they will cover figurative speech and metaphors there. Would you rather that they used less emotive aphorisms ? eg "Look, you know, if it's all right, um, how about making me, Jesus, a bigger part of your life. If that's ok..."
Yes, the seriousness and heart felt emotion of that would be sure to have won them over in droves.

Your ignorance is showing. You really haven't got a clue. Keep reading. Get a New Living translation of the Holy Bible it is written in plain modern English. You should also find a good Bible study group, because you need help in understanding what you are reading.

" I mean really, whats going on here. Love jesus more then my little brother of mom, TRULY love him more, then my mom who has raised me and been the best mom ever, and why does he want to break families anyhow"
In a way, yes, he is saying to do this. But you have to look at in the way that God, Jesus comes first then your family.
Also look at it this way. If we, being family, look at things and do the things we are suppose to do then there is no need for 'a man's foes shall be they of his own household"
