You are looking for someone whom is a prosecutor of animal cruelty. Animals cannot be defendants in cases, the closest you will come to defending animals, would be defending the owners of animals whom have commited offenses. These will mostly be civil cases, involving a suit over damages. However, sometimes criminal charges are brought against the owners of animals when they have acted negligently.

Thus, you are not defending animals, but prosecuting humans for breaking laws of animal cruelty. You could also take on the position of a lobbyist whom works with legislative bodies to enact harsher laws, or expand exisiting laws. If you are looking to actually help animals directly, working for an animal rescue shelter would be your choice.

Prosecutures earn around 75k per year, varying widely by location. However, you would be acting on behalf of the goverment and would likely not have only these types of cases.

Lobbyists can earn much more. However, animal cruelty laws do not recieve nearly the same level of funding as other types. I imagine a salary of close to 30k is likely.

Animal Rescue works are often volunenteers, but I imagine paid posisitons do exist. I am unware of the salary range or education level.

A legal degree is only required for the first posistion. The second would likely require a bachelors but work with non-profits could also put on in this role. The final role does not require any degree, but courses in animal physology would be benifical.

A final possibility would be posisiton in criminal justice. The FBI, and likely state agencies have investigative units that focus on dog fighting rings, illegal exotic smugglaing and other forms of large scale animal related crimes.

Here, in Texas, the local animal shelter (pound) is the only government authority able to charge animal cruelty. The DA handles the cases and then there is the attorney hired by the defendant. Contact the Humane Society of the United States. They are involved with cases all over the United States. HSUS.com. There are not enough charges of animal cruelty and not enough good laws to seriously protect animals. You become a good lawyer and talk to local organizations. Your input would be invaluable. Unforturnately, animal rights organizations are usually long on heart and short on cash.

I don't think they have a specific name. It's simply an attorney who specializes in animal cruelty. District attorneys usually prosecute criminal cases when it comes to animal cruelty, where personal injury attorneys purse civil litigation (since animals are listed as personal property).
