He was a murdering thug. A victim of his times, perhaps, but a murderer nonetheless.

Ned Kelly was a true hero. Some say he was a blooded killer and some say he was a hero. This question is hard.....to me, he was both. He was a very true hero to Australia and a massive icon and on the other hand, he was also a Blooded killer. Ned's childhood was hard....His family were poor and knew they were going to be poor forever. In his teen years, things began to change and when he was an adult...it was everyman for themselfs. He stole money from the rich and gave to the poor.I think it was Jeliderie bank robbery that made him a hero. He demanded all the records of the money owed by the local farms to the bank, be given to him, and he burnt them.He was a thieving murderer ....poverty doesn't make people commit crimes.....but he was still in them times, a hero to some. "Sure he had a bad background but that is no excuse ...to make him out as a hero is disrespectful of those who truly were heroes !"Thats what one of the comments said...which is true in a way BUT this all happend many many MANY years ago and times have changed.Im not say that stealing is good, I was saying "Around that time, he was a massive icon for Australia. And Ozgirl was also right when she said "The reason why Ned Kelly became a legend was that he committed crimes against the police and the whole legal system that were corrupted at the time in 1800s. He may have been a cold blooded killer but he was peoples' hero, he wouldn't touch an innocent man." He wouldn't touch an innocent man at all, Well.....what goes around comes around...If someone killed Ned's horse and threaten him....he would kill the person and as I said, times have changed. If your neighbour had taken your lawn mower without permission and broke it....You dont go run you car through his house!!!! Thats just and upgraded version though.

Well if legend is to be believed then as oppressed irish immigrant then perhaps there was no other road for him to go down. Frankly thought becoming a fugitive is quite different from being a bushranger.

Taking lives is not in my nature so i cant really see how you could take that course but then again they were different times and much different social and economic values back then. I really can t say if i would take the same course if i was put under the same circumstances.

all in all once again providing that history is correct in all its truths then i do admire the man for the courage and ingeniuty he showed and the unity he bought to the irish community within australia.

Well, I think he was some sort of a hero although he was a murderer and thief. I believe he and his family were only treated wrong and he was trying to "fix" this somehow.
Sure, it wasn't right to murder and steal but how else could a poor man act in these days when you were starving and being treated like garbage as his family was? They only wanted to survive - somehow.
I believe that deep inside his heart he was a good man.
And if I had lived at this time and had been able to give something I would have helped them.

i learnt about him in school it was very interesting. he is an important part of Australian history and an iconic symbol for the nation.

its good that they are teaching kids about him and what happened to his family because his story really opens your eyes to how the Irish settlers were mistreated by english police. I think it is worth studying as he was a man pushed too far and he was a smart cookie to come up with the armour he used with the resources he had.

i haven't seen the movie yet but i hope they portrayed him in the right way.

Thats an interesting question, because a lot of people refer to him as a hero, which I think he certainly wasnt. But other people call him a cold hearted killer, which he was, but it is fair to say that he was pushed.

I`ve read a fair bit about him, and he was a wild man, the type that was always going to get in trouble with the law. A rebel.

And in the end, a criminal and cop killer.

i dont know why he is an australian icon. australia needs a real historic figure, like a hero not a terrorist.

students around the country are learning about him. whats the deal here?

If you are referring to the movie with Orlando Bloom, it is very good. I highly recommend it.
