Death is the primary penalty for sin.
That's why they were denied eternal life at that time.

chkibo, God Bless you for your question.
I think you are a bit mistaken. Genesis 3:22 says that Adam (thus man) may not live forever...meaning that before the fall, Adam was to live eternally. Man was created Holy, and was intended to be perfect. But the fall allowed sin to enter and corrupt the earth, and man along with it. Man was not to be allowed to eat of the tree of life--not because it would mean that he would live forever if he did, but because he was no longer allowed to live eternally, he was to be denied access to the tree of life...A fine point, I know, but I think it is a correct one.

Very good question! God created man--then allowed the serpent to rob man of eternal life in the garden. (God didn't protect His innocent creation very well when He allowed the Serpent to come to Adam and Eve!) Was man created to live forever--apparently not. Why not?? Good question!! The whole creation story is full of gross injustices against God's new and apparently innocent creation--man/woman. And those unfair injustices originate from God, by the Bible's own admission!

I think you have it backward. Originally man was meant to live forever. But when Mankind sinned against God,by disobeying him, they brought death upon themselves.Look at how old people like Methulisa lived compared to the expected life span now.

The Bible says that in the garden of Eden, “Jehovah God made to grow out of the ground, the tree of life.” The reason given for putting Adam out of the garden was so that he could “not put his hand out and actually take fruit also from the tree of life and eat and live” yes, forever! After expelling Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden, Jehovah posted “the cherubs and the flaming blade of a sword that was turning itself continually to guard the way to the tree of life.”
If Adam and Eve had been permitted to eat of that tree of life, what would that have meant for them? Why, the privilege of living forever in Paradise! However, the Bible does not say that the tree of life in itself had life-giving qualities. Rather, that tree simply represented God’s guarantee of everlasting life to the one who would be allowed to eat its fruit.
Gen. 2:17 says: "But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die.”
Did this restriction deprive them of freedom? Certainly not. They had an abundance of delightful food of all kinds to eat without eating the fruit of that one tree. It was only fitting that they should recognize that the earth belongs to God, since he created it. So he has the right to make laws that suit his purpose and that benefit mankind.
Jehovah had warned Adam and Eve that if they were disobedient and ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and bad, they would die “in the day” of their eating. True to his word, God called them to account on the very day of their sinning and pronounced the sentence of death. From God’s standpoint, Adam and Eve died that day. To carry out his purpose regarding the earth, however, Jehovah allowed them to produce a family before they died physically. Nevertheless, since God can view 1,000 years as one day, when Adam’s life ended at 930 years, it was within one “day.” (2Â Peter 3:8; Genesis 5:3-5) Thus Jehovah’s truthfulness was upheld as to when punishment would be executed, and his purpose for the earth was not thwarted by their deaths. But for a time, imperfect people, including wicked ones, have been allowed to live.

The Bible doesn't come out and say whether man was created to live forever or not but it is implied by the passages that say that death entered into this world through sin. Before God cursed the earth animals only ate plants for instance.
Genesis 1:30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so.
The Bible starts out with God's perfect creation followed by the fall of mankind because of sin, and the curse of God on creation. It ends with God's new creation where the redeemed of God through faith in Christ will live forever. In between those two bookends is God's revelation of Himself to mankind and the unfolding of his plan of redemption.
Revelation 21:1-8 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."
5 And he who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." 6 And he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. 7 The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death."

This is a very tricky subject. The reason is that the tree of "Knowledge of Good and Evil" supposedly blinded us to our true eternal nature. The other tree - which Jesus tried to give us the good news - is the tree of life. We are eternal - the Gift of God is ETERNAL LIFE. We have been blinded to that by our carnal natures. Our physical forms are carnal, and thus we need to die in the flesh, but our spiritual forms are eternal. The only way for flesh to be eternal is through procreation and creation of New life.

GOOD QUESTION, FIRST KNOW THAT THE GARDEN OF EDEN WAS HERE ON EARTH, ITS NOT FIGURATIVE, OR SPIRITUAL, IT WAS ACTUALLY LOCATED IN ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA, WHERE THE TIGRIS, EUPHRATES RIVES ARE. WHEN GOD CREATED ADAM AND EVE, HE GAVE THEM LIBERTY TO TAKE FRUIT FROM ALL THE TREES, EX CEPT ONE WHICH WAS THE TREE OF THE "KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND BAD"GEN 2:17,IF THEY TOOK FROM THIS FRUIT THEY WOULD POSITIVELY DIE GEN 2:17 THIS WAS TO SET SOME RULES IN EDEN, AND THEN THERES THE TREE OF "LIFE" WHICH IS ON GEN 3:22. SO NOW, SINCE THEY DISOBEYED, AND TOOK THE FRUIT FROM THE TREE OF KNOWLEGE OF GOOD AND BAD, THEY WERE KICKED OUT FROM EDEN, THEY WOULD NOW LOSE THEIR PERFECTION WORK FOR THEIR FOOD, GROW OLD, GET SICK AND DIE.(LIKE WE DO NOW) THEN GOD PLACED TWO CHERUBS (ANGELS) AND THE BLADE OF A SWORD, TO PROTECT THE TREE OF "LIFE". SO THEY WOULD'NT GO BACK AND TAKE THE FRUIT.GEN 3:24...-HOPE IT ANSWERS UR QUEST...AND KEEP READING UR BIBLE...MAY U HAVE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS, CONTACT A JEHOVAHS WITNESS IN YOUR AREA =)

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63
Your decaying as we speak. If your raptured when the Lord comes you’ll change your body like an old pair of unders.
You’ll get a new change of raiment washed clean in the blood of the lamb . See Zech. 3 and Rev 5 & 12
God is a SPIRIT. He says SPIRITIAL things and you have to worship him in SPIRIT and in truth.
