I came across a weird information that watermelons are originally colourless(white?) before they are cut . When cut , there's some rapid reaction which induces the red colour. Is the info. true?Whats the reason if so?

Having grown watermelon myself and cutting one before it was ripe I can answer this with confidence.

Before the are ripe they are white, but they do not react to the outside air and change color.

Ripe watermelons are most commonly red. No rapid reactions, just red.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum & Nakai, family Cucurbitaceae) refers to both fruit and plant of a vine-like (climber and trailer) herb originally from southern Africa and one of the most common types of melon. This flowering plant produces a special type of fruit known by botanists as a pepo, which has a thick rind (exocarp) and fleshy center (mesocarp and endocarp); pepos are derived from an inferior ovary and are characteristic of the Cucurbitaceae. The watermelon fruit, loosely considered a type of melon (although not in the genus Cucumis), has a smooth exterior rind (green and yellow) and a juicy, sweet, usually red or yellow, but sometimes orange, interior flesh. The flesh consists of highly developed placental tissue within the fruit. The former name Citrullus vulgaris (vulgaris meaning "common" — Shosteck, 1974), is now a synonym of the accepted scientific name for watermelon, Citrullus lanatus.

Guess it was a rumor.

First of all,not all watermelons are red in the inside, some are yellow and light orange no matter how long they have been cut open, and the red color in the inside is the result of it being ripe,I have made the mistake of purchasing a melon that was not yet ripe and the inside was pink and tasteless

In all the watermelon I have ever cut open, the outside has always been green and the inside has always been red.

What you are suggesting is crazy. The only thing I know for sure is the blood inside you is blue, but when it is introduced to the outside oxygen-non pure oxygen, it turns red. That is a fact that you can take to the blood bank.

LOL!!!

I would agree that it may be white or pale green inside.I don't know about the sudden changing to red though. It could be true but I don't think so.
