I'm not a Christian, but it is my understanding that there were books that did talk about Jesus in his earlier years more in depth. One such story mentioned him lengthening a piece of wood to help out his father with his carpentry, but these stories were voted to not be included in the Bible. I believe this decision was made in Nicaea.

Here is a link that talks about the meeting:

Exactly what Kevin Smith was getting at (with Dogma).

I'm sorry I don't have a good answer other than it probably has something to do with the politics of the writing of the Bible.

Probably because it's of little relevence to the message and purpose of the Bible.

As well, the authors of the gospels were the disciples who were with Jesus during his ministry; perhaps Jesus himself didn't tell them too much about his childhood, except where he knew glory would be given to God?

Thus, the authors took the advice we give today: they wrote what they knew, which was their time with Jesus.

Make sense?

Because the purpose of the gospel writers was not to give a complete life history of Jesus. It was to show that He was the promised Messiah who was born of a virgin as was prophecied by Isaiah and to give an account of his ministry.

Luke is the only one who gives a glimpse of Jesus middle years, probably because he went around gathering eyewitness accounts of the life of Jesus. In the opening of his letter he explains the reason he had for writing it.

Luke 1:1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, 2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, 3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.

Luke 2:42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. 43 And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, 44 but supposing him to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, 45 and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress." 49 And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" 50 And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.

Jesus was human..God as a human, to let us know that He knows what its like to be human...

...humans tend to lead normal lives at some point...no different for God when He was human...

...thus there's a big chunk of time that He spent doing normal human things...
