my dog just got neutered too, everytime he tried to lick his area i would tell him no. he didnt need a cone, you should monitor him carefully until he knows not to lick it

You'll need a bigger cone. The cone is supposed to be longer than the length of your dogs nose. If they gave you a small cone then you should certainly call them and let them know, however, Petco and PetSmart do sell them, and they also sell some pretty cool alternatives as well. For now though, keep your eye on your dog and discipline him everytime he tries to lick his surgery site.

When my dog was neutered they never gave me a cone for him. I just had to watch him like a hawk for the first couple days to make sure he didn't bother the site too much. He would lick around the site so I didn't mind it, but every now and then he'd start licking where it was stitched so you just have to swat his head away. It's a pain, but the only effective way of making sure he doesn't lick is for you to constantly keep an eye on him.

It's best if he can't reach it so he doesn't pull the stitches out - you should get a bigger cone - most pet stores carry them

No he could lick it raw, cause it to get infected or undo some of the surgery. You should monitor him closely so that he learns to stop licking himself there.

Call your vet back again, and wait to see if they prompt you to an emergency contact number.
If not call an ER animal clinic.
It is not good for him to lick the area.
You need to get a bigger, as I call it, lamp shade to deterred him from licking.
Call now!
Good luck.

NO. It will get infected. and then your dog may die or something.
