Animals can sense a defective fetus and will abort it naturally. It sounds like this is what happened here. I have a friend whohad a cat that did this and that's what the doctor told her. I know that this was a very distressing sight to come upon, but understand that the kitten had severe deformities and would not have lived anyway. The mother cat did not in tend for you to find this kitten. At the end of term, one week's gestation would not have made a difference in appearance compared to the other kittens. This kitten obviously died in utero a couple of weeks or more earlier and that's why the mother aborted it.

It's probably not the mom because generally within a few hours a mom cat has her whole litter. Never heard of a week apart. Poor little thing. Sometimes that happens :( Your neighbor needs to take care of the new little ones and when they're done with nursing, tell her to fix the mom and keep her inside!

Sometimes cats can have trouble giving birth or it may be a normal birth but they come out sick. I would've gotten sick if I saw it. Very sensitive when it comes to animals, especially kitties/cats.

It may not have been a kitten. The small stub of a tail doesn't sound like a kitten, even an embryonic one -- they have tails in the same proportion to their bodies as an older cat.

Possibly it was a baby opossum which had somehow been lost from its mother's pouch. They are born at a very undeveloped stage, and finish their maturing in the pouch.

That kitten probably was already dead inside the mother cat, and she probably gave birth to it because her body rejected it.
But, the other kittens were fine and she delivered the others later.

Aww...thats sad. I'd guess that it was an aborted fetus. Among animals, its pretty much survival of the fittest and nature has a way of taking care of those that won't survive, making it easier for the others to grow more healthy. Ever wonder why you see so very few deformed animals? Or retarded pets? I mean, seriously.... A dumb dog, isn't retarded, just untrained.

i feel so bad for the baby. Is it still alive? If it is it needs to be put to sleep. Sad but it is true. Cats can have under-developed kittens.
