It's a good idea to do some research on-line before making any kinds of reservations and walk-ins. You would want to know the demographics of the city you are planning to visit. You do not want to be stuck in a joe-moe motel-hotel and the neighborhood not so safe. Even nice hotels are located in bad neighborhood and you still do not feel safe with Security officers who are retired veterans with disabilites or intellectually challenged. I would really look deep into the star hotels and compare with other websites. 4-5 star hotels are pretty good and virtual tours help alot. Sometimes Family oriented hotels are good and safe and cheaper. Never go to Red Inn, I once made reservation on the phone 30 minutes prior to our arrival to the nearest town on the I-95 and once I arrive the reservation was never made by the customer service representative. My coupon was not acknowledge and I ended up as a walk-in and not a very safe area. I had to cancel and move on to the next town. Usually, when they say they are over booked it is a good area.

Good-Luck
I hope this is helpful info.

Reservations are always cheaper ... the difference could be from a tens of dollars to hundreds depending on the season.

I was in Malaysia KL and didnt have reservations for a room. Walk up to the westin and ask for the rack rate and its was about RM700 a night ... usually I pay about RM350 a night

In thailand I extended a stay for an extra night under rack rates and the difference was about Bt50 - under USD2

Hope this helps

Most of my friends tell me to reserve a room. I think they are right if you are in a hurry when you arrive, but if you have time, you can check out deals by looking around. If you are gonna do that, tho, I'd make sure you can stay in a nearby town in case rooms are full.
Difference? You can sometimes, but rarely, get nice rooms for as low as $30+ through discount companies like priceline and cheap tickets, but those aren't usually guaranteed. You can find a room for about $35-$45 in almost any small town, but it may not be nice. Depends on what you need.

if you walk up, ask the front desk if there are any "airline discounts" many times the hotel will have rooms that they are willing to sell at a discounted airline rate. If you are close to an aiport, this is the only way to go.

get reservations, and use a travel site like travelocity.com or expedia. com for the best deal.
