I clip my cats claws every couple of weeks, whenever I notice them starting to get long.
I've always done it myself.
I bet you could learn to do it yourself, especially if you could find someone to help you the first few times.
Seriously, I have 3 cats and it takes me maybe a minute each to do them. Actually - if they get too stressed over it, I will trim one paw and wait awhile and do the other paw another day. This doesn't stress them out so much over it.

Well, it's good that you aren't doing it yourself because it is actually dangerous. Be sure the person that does the cat's claws is aware of the danger of infection. Not from unclean instruments but from dull ones. With a dull clipper you crush the claw when you cut it and that opens it up to dirt and infection. And most clippers are too dull. I took in a cat that had a foot infection from that. He was very sick and in pain and ended up losing a whole toe. I just want you to be aware. It can also cause the cat unnecessary emotional distress. Cats hate to be held still and worked on.
I actually never have my cats' claws cut. If they have an adequate scratching post or other place to scratch, they take their claws down the proper amount themselves. I have spoken to several very good vets about it and they all tell me that they advise their customers against it, for all the reasons I mentioned.
As far as how often to have it done, you could consult the professional that does the work. Or just judge for yourself.

Take him to the groomer and spend a bunch of money needlessly. I trim my cats' claws every other Saturday with regular nail clippers and they are so used to it now that they don't even make a fuss over it. You just clip the very points off to dull them. I will sometimes paint their claws with nail polish too. I think it looks cool.

Trim them every few weeks. Use regular finger nail clippers and just snip the very end off, so that point is gone. Do not clip much more than this as you could clip the nerve and it bleeds and is painful for the animal. I have done this several times with my cats and small dogs.
Yes!!! You can do this. It is easy and only takes a few minuets. Cats only make a fuss in the beginnning, after a short time they get use to it and do not mind it one bit. You can to do it!!! LOL Good luck, God bless

There is no reason you should have to trim your kitty's claws unless they have problems with them. If you like your kitty's claws dull instead of sharp get the groomer to apply soft paws for you I doubt they carry them so you will have to go buy them and have them apply them.

I don't cut my cats claws either- scratching post does just fine. though i suppose it depends whether the cat uses it. not all of my cats have used a scratching post, just the sofa!

I take my Taffe to the vet every 4 to 5 weeks. When she is laying needing my lap I know it is time. And I notice she spends more time on the scratching post.

If your cat is an outdoor cat, then the answer is never. if your cat is an indoor cat, use Soft Paws instead of cutting her claws and thus possibly injuring her...

Actually cats LOVE to have their nails clipped. My cat can't stand still for one moment but when we clip her nails she acts like she is in a spa.
Anyways you can use normal nail clippers. I clip my cat's about once a month
