Air Force is active duty where the air force is a full time job. Active Air Force reserve requires monthly meetings and usually a summer camp. You can also be called up onto active duty at anytime. Then there is also inactive reserves. These are troops and units that have normally spent time on active duty and in the active reserves that the country keeps on call in case of emergency. Inactive reserves don't report unless called back to active duty.
Which way to go depends on what you want to get out of the military. If you want a full benefit package you should go active duty and join the air force directly. If you just want the basic training and only the possibility of serving join the reserves. Although I will tell you that at this time is seems like they're calling up all of the reserve and national guard units to do the bulk of the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
