I don't know what you consider typical, but here's what popped into my head.
Cowboys
Farm Animals
Fire Trucks
Jungle Animals
We did our son's room in John Deere stuff. It was all boy, but not too baby. It worked as he got older. He's 3 now and he loves it.

Congratulations. My husband and I just had our first boy 7 weeks ago. We did our nursery in a Starry Night, Noah's Ark theme. It is discontinued so we had to find the whole set on ebay. You can find a lot of great deals on there

I couldn't decide between Airplanes, Nautical, or Jungle animals. My friend decided for me. She started making the crib bedding. My son has jungle animals, which is fitting, because he is a little monkey.

My sister did my nephews room in dinosaurs. There are these books, "How do dinosaurs .....?" There are a many different ones, "clean their rooms?", "play with their friends?", "eat their food?". They are by Jane Yolen & Mark Teague. The illistraions of the dinos are very cute. My sis used those pics, blew them up and put them all over the room. My 3 year old son loves dinosaurs and my nephew who is 14 months cannot get enough of them.
