My jaw pops every time I open my mouth. & this has been going on since my teenage years. I told my orthodontist about it, but she said my jaw popping had nothing to do with TMJ, & also when I experience anxiety, my teeth grind. & my mouth gets tired easily when I chew gum.

You sure could have it. I bet you grind your teeth something awful when you are sleeping; I am sure that is why you get tired while chewing.

Is it causing you headaches or other problems such as a shooting pain in your jaw area?

There is a mouth guard that you can use that keeps you from doing damage when you grind your teeth in your sleep. It is supposed to work wonders.

Don't let it go too long. Get it checked out by an expert before you do any long term damage.

This sounds like tmj. But some people do have popping and no problems at all. You might go to your dentist and be checked out. I have tmj and that is how my started out. Sometimes all you need is a bite plate to wear a nite for the grinding and take the pressure off of the jaw. I was 15 years old when it started I am now 38 yrs. Also try moist heat and some ibuprofen. A soft diet will help.

Jaw popping can be a symptom of TMJ. Teeth grinding would be a potential cause of TMJ, not a symptom. If chewing gum bothers you in some way, don't do it. TMJ can be muscular or an internal derangement, but if the popping doesn't cause pain, I wouldn't be too concerned. there are dentists that specialize in TMJ care -- you might want to check one out if this is worrying you.

The short answer is yes.
Go to a TMJ specialist and get a diagnosis based on Tomography.
Don't go to a specialist who wants to do surgery.
Join a Yahoo Group on TMJ or do some web research and see if you recognize the symptoms.

Just jaw popping isn't indicative of TMJ, you'd also have ear pain, plugged or ringing ears, pain when bitting hard food, headache and pain in the joint. If you think you have these Symptoms go see your local Chiropractor
