My mom has an ulcer on the gums. It bleeds and her cheeks are swollen. The ulcer is about 1/2 inch in diameter. She has been taking off a few days from work and just saw the doctor today. Is removing the pus a good idea? She has been very stressed recently and lost a lot of sleep. Could these be the causes? What types of treatment are available? Thank you.

Almost sounds like you are describing a Major Apthous Ulcer or canker sore. However with a canker sore there shouldn't be any pus, that would be an abscess or infection. A half inch lesion is pretty large for a draining infection.
Stress has certainly been suggested as a cause of canker sores but no one really knows for sure what causes them. If it is a canker sore, it will run its course in about 12 days. Or she could have it lasered and it will heal faster and hurt less. Otherwise salt water type of rinse will help make it feel a little better.
