Hi:
I have BiPolar Type 1 Extreme. BiPolar Disorder is a combination of a few things. Some periods of time you are feeling WNL (within normal limits) then suddenly you wake one morning and you are so happy, flying high, nothing can shake this mood. And I do mean nothing. You can stay in Mania (Feeling Great, not a care in the world...) for days, weeks and rarely for months. I just happen to be in the extreme catagory and I cycle months at a time.
But then you wake one morning and you are so depressed, hopeless, nothing is right in your life and you think it can never be right again, etc. I call this the "Crash and Burn". When you go from such a high dropping within minutes, hours you quickly pass the normal range and plummet right into a major depression. This is the "Manic" phase
Mania is the best feeling in the world to a BiPolar person but you have to realize that at the end of EVERY mania episode there is the manic phase or the crash and burn as I call it. There is no changing the mania to manic, it is just how BiPolar is. The goal is to slow the drop down and keep it as close to the normal range possible.
Now, since you are even asking what Bipolar is (either for your self or someone, you MUST see a doctor asap for proper treatment and diagnosis.
BiPolar is not an illness to fool around with. It is a serious disorder, must be diagnosed properly (it can mimmic depression), treated properly with therapy, medications, or a combination of both.

It is also known as manic-depressive which is exactly as it implies. A person with this disorder has very high manic episodes in which they could be up for days at a time just doing exercises. On the other extreme when they come down they have very severe depressive episodes. Time in each phase varies from person to person. It is very treatable today with medical intervention.

It means your moods range from either really manic and happy, to so depressed you can barely function. In other words very polar , both ends of the spectrum.

It's the newer term for "manic depression". It's a psychiatric disorder characterized by periods of extreme energy and "mania", and sever depression.
A lot of people are including the idea of "mood swings" into their description of this illness. It is far more serious than mood swings, and the mania or depression can last for minutes or even weeks.

It means you are what is called manic-depressive. It just means you need meds to regulate your moods because you go from being extremely happy to very depressed in a short amount of time-even minutes. And it happens several times daily in lots of cases. Don't fret-there are lots of new and good meds out there now to help ithout over-drugging patients. Get some if you need them and don't be embarrassed, you'll never know the people who are on them that you'd never guess.

Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric condition defined by recurrent episodes of significant disturbance in mood. These disturbances can occur on a spectrum that ranges from debilitating depression to unbridled mania. Individuals suffering from bipolar disorder typically experience fluid states of mania, hypomania or what is referred to as a mixed states in conjunction with depressive episodes.

Simplified--it's like riding a mental roller coast--soaring into exhilarating highs and crashing into deep pits of lows. When you are up, you don't want to sleep; it's go, go, go, with irrational behavior. When you are down, you are flat on your back in despair.
