I would base the music on your Grandparents. Music they would have liked to begin with.
Get into a conversation with Grandma and find out if she and Grandpa had a favorite song when they were courting.
Ask their child (your parent) and any aunts and uncles what songs they feel would fit.
Music from the 40' and 50's. Songs like Always, StarDust, AsTimeGoesBy, Unforgettable, TheVeryThoughtOfYou, ThoseLazyHazyCrazyDaysOfSummer.
There are a few songs that should definitely be included to represent the 60's and 70's. BlowinInTheWind, sung by Peter, Paul and Mary and Abraham,MartinandJohn, sung by Dion. For the 70's, AmericanPie, sung by Don McClean.
I'll leave the 80's, 90's and beyond up to you. :)
Good Luck... This is a wonderful idea.

So, they were born in 1918 or so. That gives you ragtime, the roarring 20's, the big band era, eary rock and roll, the folk 60's, later Rock and Roll, the Beetles/Stones, Disco and whatever crap kids listened to in the 1990's. It wasn't anywhere as good as what WE had when we were younger. (Oddly enough, my dad made the same comment about my music. What did he know?)
You might ask everyone you can get hold of what their favorite song was when they were 16 - 26, and put the most popular ones in. Most people remember the music that was playing when they were courting. Tastes differ. Not everyone spent the 1960's in a turtle-neck sweater listening to Peter, Paul and Mary.

I'm sure you'll need a few songs, Neil Young's "Old Man" is a great song about a son's feelings about his father. If you think there might be some humor available, you could throw in some Aretha, "Chain of Fools"!
..hey, you asked in Genealogy! I would definitely mix music from all the family members era, favorites maybe of "their" time. Sounds like a neat DVD, good luck in the choices.
