They are hypocrites. Thats pretty simple. They got into the ministry because they know there are a lot of desparate people hoping for a miracle and they, the preachers, hope to con them out of their money. Look how well they live. Consider the "parsonage" of Jim Bakker of the PTL Club, it was a huge mansion complete with an air conditioned dog house. Or Rev. Paul Crouch, exposed in the LA Times as having paid a TBN staffer over $140,000 to be quiet about their homosexual tryst in the TBN chalet high in the mountains overlooking LA--anybody who thinks Jesus would have approved of that is not playing with a full deck. And now they have the treasury opened to them by Pres Bush to buy their loyalty and their endorsements for the Republicans. Cute. Real cute. But if there really is a God they will pay big time in the afterlife. Hope they can take air conditioning where they're going for eternity...

He said to give unto Ceasar what is due. He did not mean to blindly give your money away! That is why I make as many deductions as I can! Now some of these religious leaders may have bad accountants (or dont use TaxSlayer like me) or they may be trying to hold back. Obviously, what the governemnt thinks it is due was more than what they thought the government should get, thus the jail time. Honestly, Jim Bakker mislead many people and deserved jail time. He is the only religious leader that I know of that has gotten charged with tax fraud. EDIT: To the guy above me, they are not-for-profit organizations. All not-for-profit organizations get tax breaks; even the Church of Satan.

Jesus is perfect - they aren't. Leaders of all kinds are convicted of all kinds of frauds - Christian leaders are held to a higher standard - and rightly so. Still, they will be forgiven - by God if not by the rest of us, eh?
Good thing to forgive is divine - it is also required of us. it's much more fun to condemn and point fingers at others, tho' - isn't it. But, as always, point one finger out and you'll find that the others are pointing back at you.
Just something to think about. God Bless.

They are not as handy with fish as Jesus.
I dislike being mean, but I have known a few Pastors that could fall into this category. I believe the reason is that they are getting "creative" in their income trying to eek out a living and have a decent retirement. I do find fault with them, but greater in the congregation that does not take care of their leaders.
Others, mostly on T.V. and in mega Churches, are guilty because they are focused on "In God We Trust" and not trusting in God.

Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Christians are sinners, they have just accepted the free gift of salvation.
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, whoever believes on him, shall not perish but have everlasting life.

Listen those that have ears to hear... A Christian shall be known by the works of his hands not by the words of his mouth. IE Does the man walk the walk or does he just talk the talk.

There are tax frauds of every creed, colour, and belief. There are atheist tax cheats, Christian tax cheats, Wiccan tax cheats, Mormon tax cheats, Muslim tax cheats, Hindu tax cheats, Zoroastrian tax cheats.... as with anything, stereotypes are just that - stereotypes.

I think your question answers itsself. Jesus said, "If you love me you will follow my commands." Stealing from the government is NOT following His commands. Everyone who says Lord Lord, will NOT enter into heaven.
