Well if the church is going to use your money just to build a bigger church, then I think that God would much rather you give your money to people who really need it. If there is a church fund for a charity that you believe in or that is of great service to others (not just sending missionaries somewhere to convert them), then it is fine to give it to the church. If you are giving 10% only to an organization because it is a Christian organization and denying assistance to people who really need help (but may not be Christian), then I don't believe it is charity.

Give money to homeless shelters, children's hospitals, domestic violence shelters, and soup kitchens, whether they are secular or faith based. Don't put money in church collection plates because a lot of it will be used to build bigger churches and stained glass windows. The people that need the money are the ones sleeping on park benches every night with an empty stomach, not a church group raising money to go on a skiing trip. If God is all powerful, he can pay for the churches directly himself. He wouldn't need his followers to pay the money.

God says you are to give him 10%. Which means you can give it to any church, or christian organization that you beleive is doing God's work. It doesn't even have to be the same organization twice. Ideally though, you would mainly give it to your home church. Because, this is the church that supports you in your spiritual growth, and you in turn would want to help them to continue this for others.

Give your 10% to God. Pray for wisdom (Eph 1:17) and He will show you where He wants to work. God can reveal Himself in many different ways. For example, if God gives you a heart of compassion and sympathy for children in Africa or Muslims in the middle east, perhaps He wants you to donate your money or time to that cause.
Sometimes the church is the best choice, and sometimes it isn't. Decide with God.

The Bible says a 10th of your money or my money is God's already. What we give beyond that amount is a gift from us. So if you are holding back the 10th... You are stealing from God! Now to whom should we give it to. Well the Bible says bring your gifts to the church on the first day of the week.
The Book of Malachi and chapter 3 verse 10 gives us a challenge to tithe. Hey, why not give to the church? Why not give to other Christian organization? Just make sure you give God's what is His!

Old Testament only suggested 10 percent in one place. other places suggest 30 - but I am not able to give you verse and chapter.
Give ALL that you possibly can and still live without being hungry or cold. Get rid of the extras, like if you have 2 lawnmowers, give one away. Stuff like that.

I think you should give it to the church, because they will make sure that money goes to further Gods kingdom. It is a good way just to put it in Gods hands and say "here you go, do what you want with it". If you give money to a group that isn't a Christian organization, then I think it takes the glory away from God, or at least it has the potential to.

Give your 10% to the ACLU & Planned Parenthood... and maybe you'll have a chance in H E L L of combating the religious oppression in this world.
:D
Does the church get to tell you how to do everything? What's the point in free will if dogma is absolute?

Are you letting the church handle your finances? Or is it money that you worked for? Shouldn't you do what you want with your money?
