Reconciliation (Penance, Confession) is the sacrament where sins are forgiven to those who are truly sorry. But there remains the punishment due to the sin and that also needs to be satisfied and the damage done needs to be healed. Purgatory, which is not a place but a purification, is for the punishment to sin which might remain. But that can also be taken care of by doing good, loving, praying.
An indulgence is the remission of the punishment due to sin and is given for some good thing done or prayer.

Reconciliation includes penance as part of atonement which is punitive . indulgence is the pardon or remission of punishment . that's a catholic value system I personally take exception to anything that includes life after death aside from next generations . hence purgatory is only an earthy concept of a temporary hell with a light at the end of the tunnel much akin to a sentence in prison that is commuted or started with the possibility of parole and not consecutive life sentences that can't be overturned . death is also hell forever as the original Hebrew in the old testament described the garbage pits where dead bodies were taken to be burned outside the city which evolved into the (fictionalized often by outside of church artistic efforts )contemporary hell fire as a design by an inhumane brutal god of cruel and unusual punishment.not the ideal exemplar for an already violent and vengeful society
which lends to justification for already confused criminal minds.

Roconciliation is when you go to confession and repent and do pennance for your sin. An indulgence is when a bishop of the church blesses all people who attended mass or witnessed the mass with forgiveness of their sins. I once watched a mass with Pope Benedict xvi on EWTN and he forgave everyone who witnessed the mass in the world including those who watched it on TV. Yes we still have to go to purgatory because all sins have a consequence and we have to take our consequences. Purgatory is to purge the soul because sin cannot enter heaven. We have to purge our souls before we enter heaven. Purgatory isn't as bad as it sounds though. I have been told that it was described as a place where you are content because you are not in Hell suffering but you just aren't as happy as you would be in Heaven

I belive the real question could be: "are Catholics nonetheless Orthodox?" The Orthodoxs' mess and conduct are greater historical than Catholics'. The Catholics have lost plenty from the classic Christianity.
