Technically, Christians can't "go to church" because the body of believers is itself "the church", according to the bible.
You're absolutely right in that God's presence is not limited to a church building.
Having said that, Christians gather for the same reason that any other group of like-minded people get together. For fellowship and community and mutual encouragement. In this way, the body of believers, again "the church", is a physical representation of God's love, as it was meant to be. Meeting in a church building is the most common way to do this, but it is by no means the only way. The OT church used to meet in one anothers' homes for the same purposes.

God created us as social beings. Life is so much harder when you try to go it alone! I see church as an opportunity to experience some awesome fellowship with other believers. At church we encourage and we are encouraged. It reminds you that even though sometimes you feel alone and overwhelmed by the world, you are NOT alone!
It inspires people to set aside their other responsibilities for a few hours and worship their Maker. Church is sometimes the only time of the week that a person associates with other believers.
So, in short, encouragement, fellowship, accountability, worship... Yes, God is everywhere, and He loves it when you worship Him throughout the entire week, wherever you are. But He never intended for us to make the journey alone. He wants us to build each other up in our walks with Christ, and what better way to do it than to meet regularly and rejoice together!

Spiritually speaking, the whole world is ruled by satan. However, THE LORD GOD has made an exception to that rule and so made the Chirstian Churches excluded from the ruling places of satan. On one hand, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST said the time has come that the FATHER would be worshipped in the spirit and truth. Thus, as a christian it is by your sense of love that you attend worship service if Catholic/ Ortho or Thanksgiving service if Hebrew oriented churches or fear service if mormons or praise service if Born again/ Fundamentalists or glorification service if Protestant/ anglican or honoring service if scientology / science churches or love service if miracle crusaders. If you are a Christian in the spirit, then your service either worship, thanksgiving, fear, praise, glory, honor and love then you are not bounded by time and space-as you are in the spirit like me-THE LORD JESUS CHRIST breaches the walls of division and walls of hostilities among believers.THANKS GOD; FEAR GOD; PRAISE GOD; GLORIFY GOD; HONOR GOD; LOVE GOD AND WORSHIP GOD.

Love your Avatar, I have not seen Obelisk since England.
Now, I could give you the Bible verses, but some one is likely to do so. I would like to instead tell you what I get out of Church.
Family. I get to know people and they me. We keep each other accountable and teach each other. We pray for concerns together. We have a refuge from the "real" world. Notice I did not say worship, though that should be the focus of all the above. God can indeed be worshiped where ever you happen to be, but as a group we are stronger than individual.
I would like to say it helps keep us in one accord, but you know that any Church over a week old starts to get bound by tradition and ritual.

You do highlight an important part of the Christian life. That is the awareness that God is where we are. God is watching over us. And our lives ought to reflect the spirit of worship in all we do.
Now to address why go to church.
Fellowship, communion of the saints, the bible encourages us to keep fellowshipping. To learn, to discuss, to encourage, to teach, to pray for, to pray against (demons and strongholds) to worship God corporately, to bring tithes and offerings, to put our hands to the plow, to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To sing hymns and songs of praise, and glory and honor. To meet and eat, to help people new to Christ, to get our "marching orders" for the upcoming week. To recieve a word from God. Hmmm.
Can't think of anything else right at this moment.
Church isn't just a physical building, but it is the body of Christ being knitted and strengthened together.

SailCat,
We are told in the scriptures that the first century Christians gathered, partook of the Lord's Supper, and gave on the first day of the week. We are also told what they did as a Church group and how they organized the Church Structure in Paul's letters to Timothy. Have a great week.
Thanks,

You lack of knowledge is overwhelming...
Hebrews 10:25
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
We come together to strengthen each other through exhortation.. not to meet with God we are always with Him for he lives inside us... Jim

By going to church, people are able to worship God together and glorify Him. One can learn more about God when he/she meets with others in church (one person does not have all of the answers). It also helps for maintaining accountability.

Those who can follow the laws of God and see God everywhere don't need religion. But who is doing that. Only a rare few. Church is meant to bring one more love of God in the association of those who have love of God. If ones church is not doing that then you either need a new church or another Path. Read Bhagavad Gita as it is BY Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada -tells how to see God everywhere. Beyond Religious designation. go to harekrishnatemple.com Totally enlightening
