Well I bought a couple of containers of each at the Wal-Mart deli tonight for our BBQ tomorrow ( We are putting a pork butt & ribs on the smoker at 4am!!) I had a sneak taste tonight as I have other sides to prepare as well such as homemade coleslaw, baked beans, pasta salad, grilled corn on the cob.....I had to compromise somwhere, anyways, the difference I noticed was that the amish potato salad had very little mustard if any, was very sweet, creamier & did not have the pickle relish that the southern style has......Both are equally yummy!!

Ok, German is usually served warm or hot. Yes the dressing is vinegar based while typical American is Mayonaise based. I just answered a similar question a couple weeks ago. I used to get German Potato salad at a German Deli. They told me their "secret" dressing. It was bottled Italian! But there are many variation and some are made with bacon and the bacon drippings for the oil. I have aslo had French potato salad that was flavored with Tarragon.
