Vee-Dubs have soul.
VW Drivers are more likely to be concerned about the environment and social issues.
VW Drivers are more likely to be physically fit and enjoy outdoor activities.
VW's are fun to drive.
They will break if you neglect them like any other car, and some do have bugs like any other car maker, but the also have superior engineering. If your dub is "right" and you take care of it, it is very common to see over 300k miles. Now this is not to say that this is necessarily less expensive, German parts are costly. But ecologically speaking it is much more ethical and sustainable to stay in the same car as long as possible (assuming it is not a polluter). Get a TDI diesel anything. Lots of power, fun to drive, and 50mpg! You can easily retrofit lines to run on Veggie juice too, how responsible is that?
What is it about a VW? Soul. Vw's have soul.

It is something of a phenominon that Volkswagen has the image that it does. I have a 2003 Jetta GLI that is modified a bit, lowered, debadged, smoked lenses on the side markers, exhaust...it looks stock, but not really. and i get waves, thumbs up, the "what's up" head nod, the VW finger sign thing a lot. I have no problem pulling up to another nice looking VW and giving them the OK finger sign and they know exactly what i'm talking about.
Volkswagens come with an interesting mix of people that love their cars and have love for the people that share the "veedub love". it's great fun and there is always some sort of Volkswagen club event going on somewhere.
Maybe your friends recognize that you are a cool person that would fit into the VW scene and have fun with it? Maybe they think you are somone who needs the Euro style in your life?
It's hard to say why they would recommend a VW to you, but i'd go with it! go drive some VWs and see how they feel, if you like a more sporty car, see if you can get behind the wheel of a 2004 Jetta GLI, it's got the 1.8l turbo and is a quick well styled vehicle. if you like the hatch back look, try a GTI. if you want AWD raw performance, look into a R32. My best friend has a 2006 GTI that is a red rocket and a total blast to drive!
VWs come in all range and flavors. there is no doubt a VW out there that would fit you.

Did your friends recommend a Classic VW or a new one, and was it the Beetle they recommended?
Apart from the fact that it holds the record for the most number of cars ever built, the Classic VW Beetle is unique and special in many ways.
1) Unique styling and shape
2) Horizontally opposed air-cooled engine which is compact and easy to repair.
3) Hardy and tough.
4) Unforgettable and instantly recognisable engine beat.
5) A well-maintained car will last a lifetime.
6) Easy and relatively cheap to maintain.
7) Fairly economical.
The above are only a few features that make it a popular car, even in this day and age.

Well the new ones are not all that great from what I hear...
BUT.. the old air cooled ones mid 70's and earlier.. had a unique style and persona that NOTHING else has ever matched.
I mean, they literally made MILLIONS of those things.. but if you can find one in good to great shape it will command a price of more then a new one back 'in the day'. Go figure.
and if you find a VW convertible, well you better have a deep checkbook because anything less then $13,k is prob. either a steal or its a p.o.s.
and why.. who knows.. but I can tell you that driving one very few people ever shake their fists or fingers.. and strangers will often wave..
or maybe its the mechanical part .. remember, when you see one puttering by, its prob. pretty close to 50 years old and still runnning and running.. if you take care of them they do that.
like I said.. go figure...

Being a Diesel lover, I talked my lady friend into a new (2005) Jetta Diesel. Best move she ever made in a car. It gets 50 MPG. Let's see a hybrid match that.
The newer Diesels (The common rail) have a lot of pep. In fact the Mercedes Diesel will beat the gasser in a 1/4 mile, by only 1/2 sec, but hey, they used to be real slugs

My Jetta is just a fun little car to drive. Great in heavy traffic. And seriously loaded with air bags, which come standard. Tons of leg room (okay, I'm short) and an enormous trunk. The chilled glove compartment and center console are genius! No problems after a couple of years of driving.

GM's are poor quality cars. VW's are good because of the safety ratings. Check out Edmunds.com
I have an 02 Audi (made by Volkswagen) and I just love that car, never had hardly any trouble with it. I've also had ford, chevy, pontiacs and I will never go back to domestics.

It's a driver's car with a personality. It's for someone who enjoys the actual driving, not just the convenience of getting from A to B. It grows on you, I mean, I actually felt compelled to name mine. Then I got on a VW forum. Then I got slightly addicted to the forum, and the smart, fun ppl who frequent it.
Now I'm a fully-fledged car-crazy VW buff, and I love it!

Toyota and Honda are stolen waaay too often. VW Diesels do not have the electrical bugs that the Gas ones have. Gas ones have all the stupid sensors and all that.
oh, can you say 50mpg??
Here`s a nice review on the Golf..
