The first precept in Buddhism is to abstain from harming living things, including yourself. Therefore, suicide is seen as morally wrong and will result in negative karma, such as being reborn in one of the hells, or as an animal or as a hungry ghost. It also destroys the advantages that human life has for spiritual progress or attaining enlightenment. However, there are times when it is seen as not so bad such as in the case of someone killing themselves to save others lives. Even the Buddha committed suicide in one of his past lives. As a Bodhisattva, the Buddha slits his own throat so that starving tiger cubs may feed off his blood. Also, the Buddha condoned the suicide of the monk Channa, because he was not going to be reborn. So, while suicide in general goes against the first precept, Buddhism condones suicide under certain conditions.

In Buddhism, the goal of life is to enter into a state of non-attachment to the physical world. Suicide is a submission to the attachments of the physical world. "Sin" is not the right word, but it would be an error to commit suicide.
