I really don't care either way. What bothers me though is that some people are so adamant that she was a virgin. Like it matters. Like it's supposed to change any of Jesus' wisdom?
This is how I see it. Joseph and Mary were a young married couple. They probably had sex, and that's how Jesus was conceived. The early Christians put out their version of a virgin birth for undisclosed reasons, reasons which aren't even important to anything whatsoever.
The other possibility, is that, yes, Mary was a virgin and gave birth to Christ. Why not? God is all powerful. Miracles happen. Some animals don't need to have sex to conceive.
But, again, big deal. It makes no difference to what Christ is about, so the Christians that make a big deal about this in a hating, condemning way, are just losers.
Thank God I live in Canada, not the U.S. Bunch of hillbillies down there, descendants of the freak religious nuts who couldn't make it in Europe.

No. I don't care about small theological issues that cannot be proven or disproved to begin with.
I would be more respectful of Christianity if some believers did not try to destroy the separation of church and state, tell Africans that condoms do not help stop AIDS (as some Catholic missionaries have), bash gay unions, hold back stem cell research, claim that the earth is 6,000 years old or that evolution is not supported by evidence.
If they moved into the twenty-first century and left everyone else alone, then I would be more respectful.
But seeing as fundamentalism is growing and Christianity is starting to resemble its previous incarnations or Islam today, I won't stay silent.

No, I wouldn't have any more respect for Christianity were the case. The basic premise of a mythological "God" existing is the cause of my disbelief, and the behaviors of the institutions of Christianity are causal to my disrespect for the religion as a whole. That is another interesting idea, though... I hadn't thought of it that way.

Well speaking as a Wiccan, no. Yes, the treatment of women, in Christianity, is bad but, they're hypocritical behavior is worse. Even in their ten commandments - 'Thou shall have no Gods before me', then the new testament comes around and all of the sudden God is no longer 1 he is 3. The rule still applies though, wink, wink.

Atheism has very little to do with the details. We just don't believe in god. Anything that stems from god is also a myth. Trying to analyze individual reasons are a curious debate to have, but have no effect on our very simple, reasonable core view.

I thought that the whole virgin thing was already proven to be a case of mis-translation?
Do Christians still believe that it was actually part of the prophecies?

No, but I would be a little less likely to call Mary a lier if she admitted she had sex. I would probably write the "God" thing off to her being really gullible. The way it is now Joe is the gullible one.

Yes i would respect them a lil bit more if they also accepted that jesus was probably more likely than not a simple mortal, and accept the possibility of the non existence of god, i don't ask them to believe(or disbelieve in this case), just to accept the possibility.

nope. That concept does not affect my choice to be atheist. It has more to do with the fact that the religion doesn't make sense and has not bbeen proven and even if it were proven, it still doesn't change the fact that the christian god is cruel and egotisitc and not something i want to be associated with in any way

I don't think so. *How* Mary got pregnant really has nothing to do with my opinion of Christianity. I just simply don't believe in the supernatural, and that includes gods.
