dog chow is better than canned... many many many breeders of large dogs feed adult dog food after they used up just one bag of puppy food,,, you do not want rapid growth on dogs prone to hip dysplasia....

At 20 weeks a GSD should be off of puppy food anyway.

It is better to blend him onto a new food, thus I try to always buy a new bag BEFORE I run completely out just in case.

Puppy Chow and Dog Chow are crap food. Feed Dog Chow if that's all you can get for today, but you really should look into better foods. Your dog will poop less and look better on better quality food.

If you have to feed Purina look at ONE or Pro Plan.

GSD pups get Pano really easily so not too high on the protein, but avoid corn or wheat as a main ingredient.

WOW, you are lucky! Puppy chow is garbage.. Now is your chance to switch your poor little guy to something decent.. Forget cheap garbage foods from the grocery store.. They are there for convenience, not a nutritious choice for any breed of dog..
You would be better off to cook for your dog if you are going to feed garbage.. Check out the Canidae, it's a good food, and it's not super expensive.. Dogs love it, do well on it, and actually get the nutrition they need.
A young dog needs the best start possible. You are building the future health of this dog.. By starting out feeding garbage, you are going to sentence him to a life of health problems.. Go now and get something good for the little guy to eat, try to repair the damage that has been done!

You can feed him a different brand of large dog dry puppy chow.
Or you can feed him some large dog adult food for a few days until they get it in, but puppy chow is much better for growth.

Anything is better than nothing, but the dog chow is better than the canned. Keep in mind that changing a puppy's diet can cause him to have diarrhea.

Take this opportunity to switch him to a higher quality food. Something that you can't get at the grocery store. You want something that is going to have human grade ingredients and top quality meats. Consider Innova, Evo, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Wysong, Wellness, and similar foods. Many are carried by Petco.

Good luck to you your pup.

Feed your pup adult dog food. Large pups have a tendency to grow too big too fast and that can cause some joint problems. Feed your dog a food like Innova Evo or Canidae and you won't have to worry about feeding puppy food.

What's the difference. The quality of the foods you mentioned are all about the same--very poor.

My first suggestion would be Canidae as it is for all life stages. Or Wellness.
http://www.canidae.com/dogs/all_life_stages/dry.html
Second suggestion (as it is the holiday; this would be if you have access to Wal-Mart) would be Maxximun Nutrition Lamb and rice.
If you just need something from around the house, boil up some chicken and rice for him.
