The RICE method of trestment works well for shin splints; at least 2 weeks rest; ice the muscles; compress them, runners tights work well for this or there are specific shin splint compressors - or though these work out expensive as they're F' all use once you've healed; Try and keep your leg elevated with the weight off it.

To excercise and strengthen the leg you can walk around on your heels for short periods, stretch your achilles and calf muscles and your shins themselves.
A good stretch for shins is to kneel on a carpeted floor, legs and feet together and toes pointed directly back. Then slowly sit back onto your calves and heels, pushing your ankles into the floor until you feel tension in the muscles of your shin. Hold for 10 to 12 seconds, relax and repeat.

Shin splints are caused by muscle imbalance. Calf strong, shin weak. The way to correct this is to strengthen the muscles at the front of the legs. Lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the edge. Pull your toes upward against the resistance of the mattress. Try to work up to 3 or 4 sets of 5 – 10 reps each. Good Luck

Icing helps, but some rest may be needed. A great tip is to walk backwards on your toes for about 100 meters and rest. It should hurt a little but if the pain gets too extreme, stop. This strengthens the muscles in front of the shin. Also, it couldn't hurt adding a little calcium to your diet to help strengthen the bones.

Icing down the injury, stretching...and rest. Stop running for a few days, and follow these steps.
