It's an Army song. Not Marine. A caisson is the wheels and axles uses to move artillery and ammo around. Can also be used moving caskets during funerals.

First of all it wasn't the Marine Song it was the Army song. Cassions are carriages usually pulled by horses that carried large cannons into battle especially during WW1. Nowadays they are used during Military Funerals to carry the coffins to the cemetery.

I'm not sure how old you are but if you remember President Kennedy's funeral his casket was put on a cassion. It is a horse drawn wagon like vehicle used to carry a casket to the grave site.

Well, actually, the word is spelled "Caissons", and "The Caissons Go Rolling Along" has been adopted as the official U.S. Army song.
