We have a Weimaraner who is a little over a year old. She is extremely high-strung. My husband is an over-the-road truck driver and she goes with him on the truck. She does pretty well there, but is a holy terror when she comes home. Will she settle down with age? Please don't suggest professional training as my husband is only home about 4 days a month.

I don't mean to be rude, but why would you have purchased such a high strung breed as a dog to be cooped up in the cab of a truck all day? Did you guys not do any research on the breed? http://www.weimclubamerica.org/weimaraners/rightforyou.html Whoever the breeder is who sold it to you, they should be neutered, along with their dogs.

No, the weim will not settle down at any point in the near future. The number one reason they are given to rescue is because they are too much work.

It's really not fair to expect a dog like that to be caged like that all day, every day.

It may be time for that dog to stay home with someone who can walk it and exercise it regularly and to get a cat or a low energy older dog for your husband.

Good luck to all of you. : )

Weimeraners are bred to be hunting dogs, and all the hunting dogs I have been around are high strung, sometimes even well into old age. That is not the breed I would have picked to travel in a semi truck all the time.

You picked an extremely high energy working dog as a pet! These guys were bred to hunt all day, so they have incredible energy. I've seen some keep up that energy level into their teens! She needs a big yard and lots of ball throwing, swimming, and running.

Yes she will calm down. I have vizslas they are similar. Good training will help but I know how crazy they can be. My older vizsla, now 9yrs calmed down at about 3 or 4 years tremendously. We just got another he is only 10 months....wating for the 3 yr mark! HA HA!!

weimaraners are HUNTING DOGS,, surely you knew this when you researched the breed... they have been bred for generations to have high energy in order to be able to hunt all day long in any weather conditions.... lots and lots of exercise for this dog to keep her happy and to take the edge off.... why people buy hunting dogs and then don't hunt with them is rather strange...
