If you want really good teeth and actually follow what your orthodontist tells you to do, try to brush your teeth after every meal.
However, for someone with such a low level of personal hygiene as me, I only brush my teeth twice a day - and my teeth aren't that gross... at least, I don't think so.

I hadbraces for 2 in a half years. August 1, will be my first year having them off.
You should brush your teeth 3 times a day. Or after every meal. Don't drink too many cokes because it's possible for you have spots on your teeth. Diet cokes count [only cokes that are dark like dr. pepper, coke, cherry coke, pepsi, ect]
D0 N0T each candies like laffy taffy, or now and laters. They will seriously break a brackett.
Just brush your teeth after every meal and you should be fine. :)

at least 3 times a day and be sure not to eat sticky foods. if you want to chew gum, try Freedent. not the best tasting but it will not stick to your braces.
