I am reluctant to use the word atheist to describe my own unshakable disbelief. Not that I'm ashamed, afraid or even embarrassed. But simple because it seems so self evident to me, the truth, that there is no god, giving that conviction a special title somehow dignifies what it denies. After all, we don't have a special word for people who don't believe in ghosts or witches.

Yes, I prefer to think of myself as a humanist because I believe only humanity can save itself. It does say 'atheist' on my profile page but that's just to clear up any misconceptions (some people here aren't very bright).

Atheist isn't a label, God is a much more controversal, sought out and believed religion there must be some sort of description for someone who doesn't follow that.

I think the terms "atheist" and "theist" are completely reasonable and helpful to ongoing dialog between those who believe there is no God and those who believe their is a God. After all disbelief is impossible; those who disbelieve something are actually disagreeing or believing the opposite.

His point is valid, but the word exists because it is useful. It is much easier to say "atheist" than to say "someone who doesn't believe in a god".

Too bad society likes labeling people.

He puts it very eloquently; I never considered what he brings up.

So it's true! R&S really IS only intended for (people who are described as) atheists!

I think you have a good point. Why have a word for nothing?
