Please? He lost his d.l. from a dui in 2001. Unfortunately, he had a whole bunch of them prior to that date. He went to a live in treatment center and I am proud to say he hasnt had a thing to drink since then. Yet, he needs to be able to drive. Any suggestions? All the states are connected ( in other words, if he applied for a license in say, VA., he would be refused because it would pull up his record in Florida, which revoked his license for life). I think the guy deserves a chance, he has not had a drink for over 6 years, yet, he feels like he is condemned for life! Oh, I admit, he has had loads of DUI's, but none that resulted in an accident or anything like that. In fact, I remember when he had one in his own driveway! No kidding, I was there!!! how that happened I will never know 'cause he didnt drive anywhere but we are talking about Florida here, and Florida is extremely corrupt! So, folks, whatcha think? Can't wait to here this controversial response..LOL!!!!

My oh my! I knew this would get a strong reaction, but nothing like this! As I said, he has STOPPED drinking and attends AA religiously. He has given back to the community 10 fold. He is NOT whining or complaining. He is a good man. I hope, with all the hate letters I received that you realize alcoholism is a disease. Its not like he woke up and said, " Gee, I think I will be an alcoholic today" If the AMA recognizes alcoholism as being a disease, can't you? If he had cancer, would you be as harsh towards him? As I said, he has quit drinking for over 6 years! People do change ya know. And yes, in Marion Co., Fla, where I live, there is police corruptness. Lets put it this way - the sheriff was arrested for stealing 180,000 bucks from a police fund. Crazy thing is, he was on either 20/20 or 60 minutes 5 months earlier for being such a great sheriff. Did he go to jail? no. Anyone else would have. so, he who is without sin, cast the first stone.

Your cousin should seek advice from an experienced criminal attorney in the State of Florida. There does not appear to be a provision for a permanent revocation of a drivers' license in Florida Statutes under 316.393. However, there are strict requirements for completing treatment and the DUI education course ordered by the Court in terms of getting a license temporarily re-instated or re-instated. It is important that your cousin has complied with the Court's order. If he has not, he should discuss this with a Florida criminal lawyer who can assist him. The criminal attorney will be able to advise your cousin about the statute, Court's order, ignition interlock devices, hearings and proceedings before the DMV, licensing, etc. Criminal attorneys know the DMV, District Attorney, Courts, and means of getting licenses re-instated. Since it is their specialty to know the law, criminal lawyers have solutions that lay persons do not have- in fact, they have solutions that other civil lawyers do not have. I highly recommend completing the programs recommended by the Court and obtaining the advice of a criminal lawyer so that your cousin can put this behind him once and for all. There are lawyers who work sliding scale, and sometimes criminal attorneys associated with legal aide offices in various states are available to assist. (You can internet search for Florida Legal Aide or Florida Legal Aide Society.) He has come a long way and has a huge accomplishment in not drinking since 2001. It is best that he face this one last hurdle in Florida so that he can be truly proud of his accomplishment, and proud of himself. Best wishes to you both.

You and your cousi need to be taken to the nearest busy hospital and be forced to watch what little dui's can do. If you choose to stay Dumb Under the Influence of your cousin then you don't need to be driving. Why don't you look up haw many kids get killed by DIP'S (Dumb in public) thinking of just a short hop to the store for more "refreshments" Have you ever been in a therapy gym...you need to stay away from this bad influence while you are still sober enopugh to realizes he is a serial dui, his odds of causing a big accident are not in his favor. Losing your liscense for life in any state is not a little thing.. So he's a liar too. PS, I wouldn't get in the car with him if he was sober and I was driving. Some people were meant to stagger. and you can take that "lol" to the nearest funeral home...they will put it with the echoes of you and your idiot cousins funeral wreaths~ pfft` pitiful

Driving is a privilege, not a right.
He will not be able to get a driver's license in any other state because the first thing they ask is if you have a license in another state. If he says yes, then they will find the ban. If he says no, then he is committing perjury and will go to prison for it.
Since he put himself and everyone else on the road at risk when he got "a whole bunch" of DUI's, he needs to find another way to get around.
As for Florida being corrupt, I think they are doing an outstanding job for getting someone that dangerous off the road.

you are right in your statement when you said they are all connected no he will not be able to get one in another state, nor should he be allowed to. drinking and driving is a very stupid and foolish act. You said he was a multiple offender which makes it a habitual act. He does not deserve a license. Congrats on being sober for 6 years, and even if he hasnt ever hurt anyone in does not change the fact that every time he drove drunk he endangered the lives of hundreds if not thousands of people. he acted irresponsibly and now he must live with his actions.

I don't think you'll find a solution other than appealing to the State of Florida.
Try the States Appeal and Pardon Board. Try talking to an attorney about filing the appeal. Maybe he can get a restricted license that will enable him to drive during day light hours to and from work only.

I can tell you that if he is a life suspension is Florida, he is finished.
Every state in this nation has their motor vehicle records in cynic now. Thus, if you are under suspension in one state, you can not get another license in another.
And if you do some how fall between the cracks and get one, it is only a matter of time before they find out and you get a nice jail sentence.
Sorry, he made his bed, and he must lie in it.
Oh, and as an added note......... I have been a cop in Florida for a long time... and the "extremely corrupt" you speak of does not exist. See, he is a criminal, and he must pay... it is not the state's or the police's fault he is a convict!

I hope he has changed, mainly for his health reasons, but I'd suggest he get a bicycle or learn to live on the bus line. He needs to quit whining about his fate. HE is the one that chose this way of life so he needs to make the most of it.
My grandfather was an alcoholic and almost died from cirrhosis of the liver. He didn't drive but he also didn't feed his family or pay for the room they lived in so my grandmother and 3 kids were constantly moving and during the depression, that was very hard.
My aunt was an alcoholic and would rather be with her friends than take care of her son, leaving him alone for the family to check on and care for. He is so messed up from his growing up years (he also had an abusive father) that he is now an alcoholic and abuses anyone he can.
And my father was a drinker and would rather meet his friends at the bar instead of bringing the paycheck home and feeding his family. One night when he got off work, he went to the bar to be with his friends instead of coming home and he ended up being in a m/c accident and almost died the first night. He was in a coma for two weeks and ended up with permanent brain damage. Life at home was a hell on earth as my brothers and I grew up. Accidents from drinking not only hurt the person, it hurts the family even more.
And you want me to sympathize with your cousin? He chose to drink and drive and constantly abuse the law and now he is paying the price. It is HIS fault so quit being childish and saying FL is corrupt when all the officers were doing was their job. Instead of whining about it and playing the victim, let him stand up like a man and come up with other solutions and be thankful he still has a life.
He can live on or close to a bus line to get to work or rely on family who likes to make excuses and blame the corruptness on officers who did their job against someone who had no regard for human life.

hey 3 strikes your out! the law is the law. try proving that a person hasn't had a drink in 6 yrs, can't do it. he has to live with the consequences of his actions, it all was his choice. very lucky that he never had an accident let alone killed anyone. a friend is going through this too. told him: use the bus. i'm not driving you around all the time. you made your choices. congrats to you cousin on his sobriety- he should be proud.
