its a medium sized dog, and it's teeth are extremely clean ad its young, not very young but not an adult maybe just a grown up big puppy if that makes sense.it cant go inside, and it seems really clean like it has been taken care of, it has a flee color on it too. but i think i might end up taking care of it, it is well behaved and seems very young. i dont want to take it to the vet yet, but if i have some flea and heartworm medicine should i go ahead and give it to the dog? or would i have to take it to the vet first? im not sure if my parents would approve of keeping it, because vet visits do cost alot. but i feel for this animal because i love all animals and i cant just ignore it. please provide me with good reasonable answers, thank you. :]

You aren't going to like this...
First, make some posters describing her, just in case the owner is looking...

Second, you have to take her to the Vet, before you give any meds... And now is a good time, because most people give heartworm meds at the beginning of the moth, so she might be due.

Most importantly, do NOT give the dog any medications you have lyingh around. You could kill it that way.

Since the dog looks well cared for, find out what breed it might be and post found posters and ads. A well cared for dog probably has a loving owner crying over its loss and looking for it. You can alert your local shelter without having to give them the dog, so please do so. You can also notify your local police, as they take lost reports in many areas. Don't give every detail. Withhold some minor thing like the color of the flea collar, or a certain colored spot on the dog to be sure that should someone claim him, it would be the real owner. With that in mind, don't put the dog's picture on any posters. Try all those things, and also the found pet pages on www.petfinder.com or www.fidofinder.com If they all fail after a couple of weeks, then you can consider if you want to keep the dog or not. Good luck.

Added: Heartworm preventative can kill a dog if it has heartworms already. The dog has to be tested before you can give it heartworm preventatives. :-)

My biggest question is that if it is a stray dog that seems to have been taken care of, have you bothered trying to find its rightful owner? Post "found" signs around your neighborhood with a general description of the dog and leave out some particular marking or something in your description to insure the proper owner identifys the dog. As much as you want to keep it, the right thing to do is try to reunite a perhaps beloved family pet with its rightful owner. If you can't locate the owner and decide to keep it, you may want to check to see if some vets in your area will allow you to be on a payment plan to pay for health care for your dog. Remember, a dog takes time and money. It also needs proper training and exercise in addition to lots of attention. Please educate yourself on the care, training and feeding of a dog. There are many resources at your local library, bookstore or even on line. Good luck!

The flea medicine is okay to give the dog but only if it's the kind that you put on the dog no pills. But dont give it heartworm medicine! Why would you want to give a dog medicine for something it may not even have? It sounds like this dog has a home you need to concentrate on finding its owners first before you give it any kind of medicine unles the dog show signs of being sick.

First off don't just randomly give medication to any pet that you don't know the history of. Second, report the dog to animal control or take it to an animal shelter yourself. If the dog appears to be well taken care of, someone may be looking for it . If no one claims the dog then look into adopting it.

You should contact the local shelter, place an ad in the local paper (most lost and found ads in local papers are free) and maybe hang some flyers. I would ask your parents if it would be okay to bring the dog indoors while trying to locate its owners. If they say no, you should call the shelter so the dog stays safe.

You should contact the local shelter and tell them you found the dog. Someone may be looking for it. I would not give it anything because you don't know what the owner has already given it.

Flea collars don't work by the way, unless your trying to keep them off the neck only.

First check with your local humane society. or dog shelter to see if any one has reported it missing. also run an ad in the lost& found section of your local newspaper to see if someone is looking for it. If noone is take it to your vet get it checked out. Also ask your parents if its o.k. for you to keep it .LOTS OF LUCK
