Okay, so I wanted to get my hair colored a lighter color, but my hair is a really dark brown, almost black. Would I have to bleach my hair first, or can the dye change my hair color without all the hassle?

Well it depends on how light you wish to go. If you wish to go just a few levels, you can use a high lift tint, which is peroxide and color. If you wish to go three or more shades lighter, bleaching will most likely be required to get it light enough to deposit the shade you wish over it. you can use a cream bleach; its mild and will lift you with not a whole lot of damage. I would say ask a stylist whenever you go lighter. It’s the best way to assure that your hair will not be over-processed and therefore damaged. This can cause your hair to break off mid-strand or even fall out completely. Good luck, hope this helps!

DO NOT USE BLEACH...especially on very dark hair...it will turn orange!! I know from experience. If you are doing this at home, it will take a while to lighten such dark hair. My
suggestion is that first you should go ONE shade lighter and gradually lighten it that way. But the best choice for immediate results is to go to a professional.

You will need to bleach it a shade or two lighter than you want it. Then dye it the color you want. It's a double process if you (brunette) don't want orange hair.
