I got my puppy, Squishy, several weeks ago. She's my first dog. She only seems to bite me and not friends and strangers. She licks everyone else, even people she's never met. She never seems very happy to see me, and she chews on my hands and clothing. I say "no" firmly and give her a toy to chew on, but she doesn't seem to respect me very much. Does she not like me? Why would she be so loving with other people and not me? Any tips?

She loves you and trusts you... like her mother... so she plays with you the same way... You want to teach her two things:
first, socialize her with lots of people, like you are doing, then after she has all of her shots, socialize her with lots of other pups and friendly larger dogs.

Second, you want to teach her Bite Inhibition to stop biting:

Bite Inhibition
Puppies are very energetic and playful. You want to teach them to be obedient as young as possible. In this case, teach him bite inhibition:

1. When he nips you, then yelp ! This will startle him and he will back off. Pet him for stopping.
2. If he nips you a second time, then yelp again, and pet him if he backs off.
3. If he bites you a third time, then yelp, and turn your back for 15 seconds. Then turn and pet him. If he comes around before you turn and he licks you or barks, then he is apologizing. Accept this and pet him.
4. If he nips a fourth time (they can be hard headed), then yelp, and turn around for 2 minutes. Again accept the apology, if offered. If not, then turn around and pet him.
5. Finally, after the fifth nip, yelp, then get up and leave him alone. Don't move him or put him in the crate. Instead, you move to somewhere that he can't follow. After 5 - 10 minutes, you can return to him, or just leave him alone.
6. The next time you pet him, repeat the sequence, he should respond a little faster, and learn not to nip you after a week.
7. You can fine tune the process so that he mouths you or only touches you with his lips. I taught my dog to mouth me... I didn't have the patience to go further.

The reason for doing this is to train the puppy how fragile human skin is. When puppies are in the litter, they bite each other to play. If one puppy bites too hard the sibling will yelp. If the biter doesn't back off, then the injured puppy will not play, and all the puppies will treat hard biting in this way.

Most puppies want attention and will learn anything so that they don't lose your attention. If you learn this method, you will have a powerful training tool.

You have to train your dog. Puppies teethe, and all dogs will try whatever they can get away with.
1] When she bites, grab her muzzle firmly but gently, and say 'Squishy, NO. That hurts!' Put her down and walk away.
Repeat as often as possible.
a] Grabbing muzzle makes her focus on your face.
b] Speaking her name gets her attention.
c] Stopping a 'fun' activity is called negative re-inforcement.
2] when she does something you want her to do, such as come when you call, say, 'Squishy, good girl!' and rub, pet, or give her a treat.
a] again, get her attention first.
b] verbal praise and attention will make her want to please you even more.
3] try to teach as soon as possible:
a] come
b] stay
c] down
d] heel
Get the rest of your family involved if possible, so she gets trained even faster.
You are the owner, so you are the alpha dog - a well behaved and well trained dog is a blessing - others, not so much.
Good Luck!

I dont know dogs very well but in the wild they bite and chew on thier siblings and mother, this is thier form of playing and learning through games. I would not think she doesnt like you but spend time one on one with her holding and loving her, rub your face on her face (scenting) wich is what her mom would do. Give her lots of attention and love and Im sure she will come around. When she goes to biting on you Ive learned a really good trick. Put a small spread of peanutbutter on your wrist and while she is licking it tell her good kisses. Pretty soon she will love this and the peanutbutter will not be needed you can get her to kiss on command. Hope all works out for you. Just be loving and patient :) Good luck.

She is comfortable with you and she loves you so she is playing. Puppies chew, this is what they do. Just keep saying no. Give her a tap on the nose, not hard and command no. If she isn't biting you hard then play but when she gets to rough you have to repremand her. She isn't as comfortable with others as she is with you so licking and wagging is a submissive gesture to people she doesn't know. She may seem happy and she probably is to get attention from strangers but she doesn't know who is the boss so she is just being nice. She will get it eventually.

Maybe you could spend more time with her and spoil her. You should show her that you are boss, for example on a show I watched (called It's Me or the Dog) they said that you should let it know you are boss by only letting it eat if you give it to him etc. Anyway try to give her a treat hear or there, rub her tummy while watching television or playing fetch or let her sleep with you. She will come around, I promise. I guess she is doing all that stuff because she wants to know more people besides you. Good Luck!

This may sound weird, but if you ever fed squishy and then ate some food afterwards, she will think you are feeding her first because she is dominant. She would then assert her dominance by biting. Or, she could just play rougher with you because she is used to you and likes you best and doesn't realize it hurts you.

That actually may be a sign of affection. My dog used to "bite" me all the time and when i took her to the vet it turns out she was teething. The teething on YOU shows that she wants to spend more time with you. It's not a love hate thing

Is there another dog in the neighborhood that you are friendly with. Allow Squishy to see you pet this other dog and see the dog's reaction and Squishy might then get the idea that you are an OK person

Congratulations for your new dog! To coach the dog to obey instructions you ought to be steady. Always use the equal word or phrase and continually talk within the equal tone of voice. Speak for your typical voice. Do no longer yell. Yelling frightens the dog and won't coach him/her a factor. You would possibly consider that it does, in view that simply as an instance say the dog has performed whatever that he/she is not intended to do and also you grow to be annoyed with Puppy and also you yell "No". The dog will transfer clear of you and you may also consider that you've taught him/her whatever and this would possibly not occur once more. Well, you could be part correct. You have taught the dog whatever by way of yelling at her/him and that's to be petrified of you in view that the dog would possibly not comprehend why you are yelling. Please talk in a typical voice or a tender voice while you talk to the dog. In order to coach the dog the command "No" first made up our minds what the dog can do and what the dog is not intended to do. Some of that is visible to you and your household. Some will not be when you have youngsters equivalent to you do not desire the dog at the furnishings in view that it (the furnishings) gets soiled and it'll get puppy hair. After you determine together with your household what's O.K. for the dog to do and what isn't O.K., then all people must use the equal phrase or phrases to coach the dog. Puppys be trained by way of repetition. Just preserve at it and beautiful quickly you're going to have a excellent good behaved dog. Also, please don't hit the dog--inspite of a rolled up newspaper. People say that in case you do that the dog or the puppy won't companion it with you however this isn't precise. The dog can see who's conserving that newspaper. If you desire to subject the dog you must no longer hit or yell. I had a dog that I crate knowledgeable and whilst she could no longer obey me after regularly, then I could placed her in her crate for what's referred to as a "day trip." I could no longer placed her within the crate after which placed her in a room by way of herself--she could have felt deserted. Instead I placed the crate within the room with me and I sat and talked to her till she calmed down after which I instantly allow her out. You would possibly do that. As to instructing the dog to not chunk, and to not bark-- puppys bark--that is typical however to coach her to give up barking, simply talk for your typical voice and inform her "No" or "Be relatively" or "Hush" or whatever like that. As a ways as trainer her to not chunk, first be definite that the individual isn't teasing the puppy. Biting is likely one of the methods that puppies and puppys have of shielding themselves. If the individual had no longer teased the dog, simply talk for your typical voice to the dog and inform him/her "No" or "The postman is our pal" or whatever alongside those strains. This will take awhile, however puppies are clever. Keep at it as I mentioned previous and beautiful quickly you're going to have a good-mannered dog. I just about neglected the final side of your query. Since the dog is white a few names possibly Snowball Frosty (male) Also you must make a record of names that you just like and names that go well with the dog. Take a couple of days and watch the dog and you're going to realize the dog's persona and you may also desire to make a reputation from a attribute that he/she has. For example, I had a combined breed terrier. The title she had whilst I first bought her used to be completely irrelevant. I made a record of names that I favored and I watched the dog and I spotted that she walked like a woman and held her head identical to a woman and so my new dog grew to be Lady.
