What was the precise age when you could get married in 1790?

It was legal for a girl to marry at 12 years old and a boy to marry at 14 years old, with parental consent, the age limit changed in 1927 when it was raised to 16 for both sexes, still with parental consent and this applies to the UK.

Precisely where?

(I doubt there were any laws or rules anywhere 1790)

As I've found the record: Northern US women married by about 20, 21 or so, seldom as young as 18. Men married closer to 30, when they could provide I'd guess.

To natter on a bit, recall that people were smaller, 1790 was still during that last Little Ice Age so northern girls matured later because of hard work, climate, diet.

Traditionally, English common law fixed age 14 as the age of consent for males and age 12 as the age of consent for females to enter into a marriage contract. Even though each of the United States had different marriage laws, in 1790 they all would have probably conformed to English common law.

The English Marriage Act of 1753, or Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act, abolished common law marriage in England, and if both parties had not reached the age of 21, consent had to be given by the minor's parents. Here again, with consent, the age was fixed at age 14 for young men and age 12 for young women.

In the U.S. different states have always had different laws. I would imagine the age was much lower back then than it is today. You might get better answers if you go under Politics and Government and then Law & Ethics. You should mention what country and if it is the U.S. what state.

I wouldn't of said that young! Im working on my family tree and most of em seemed to have got married at the age of 17 to their 20's. So it hasn't really changed that much i wouldn't of thought.
