Catholics are christians. Different denominations interpret things differently. We know that there were certain sects throughout Jewish history that abstained from alcohol. In general, since the Bible is against intoxication, it is a natural extension to decide not to drink alcohol at all. During the time of Jesus, it was nearly impossible for grapes not to turn to wine and quickly. Also, potable water was iffy. Nowadays, no one needs to drink wine.

Jesus told them, "Fill the jars with water." So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, ... (John 2:7-9)
Wine is used throughout both the Old and New Testaments. The first recorded miracle of Jesus was to turn water in wine at the wedding in Cana.
It is true that we should not become drunk but used in moderation, wine is a biblically acceptable beverage.
Go, eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a merry heart, because it is now that God favors your works. (Ecclesiastes 9:7)
What would Jesus do? Jesus had a cup of wine with dinner.
If some people wish to totally forego alcohol to eliminate the temptation to over indulge, that's fine. But I don't think they should force that unbiblical practice onto others.
With love in Christ.

For the record, it is not entirely true that Catholics and Protestants (Both Catholics and Protestants are Christians) use the same Bible. The Catholic Church includes books from the era between the Old and New Testament which are not included in the Protestant Bible.
As for the drinking question, many Protestant churches came out of the Holiness movement. That movement frowned on activity that might not lead persons to a closer relationship with Christ. Many of the Holiness Churches seeing the problems created by alcoholism have discouraged the use of alcohol. As an example, in my church (United Methodist) there was a time when both lay persons and clergy had to sign a pledge to abstain from liquor. We were also active in the Women's Temperance Union and other activities. To this day, we are not allowed to use wine in communion. However, laity and clergy no longer have to sign a pledge to not drink.
The Catholic Church (and Lutheran) were not part of this movement and have always had their cultures use of alcohol as part of their heritage. They use wine for communion and are able to freely use alcohol in their life as long as they don't abuse it.

Actually they don't use the same bible, there are several more books in the Catholic bible such as The Book of Tobit and the Maccabees etc. Catholics practice Catholicism, Christian usually use the KJV of the bible and practice Christianity.
I know Jesus turned water into wine but not everyone knows that yet or they reject that it ever happened.
Drinking is not a sin.

hey dude, Catholics are Christians. A Christian means a follower of Christ. No where in the Bible does it say "thou shall not drink" it does say not to get drunk because that is a sin. Also, back in Biblical times, the water wasn't that safe to drink so they mixed water with wine. The alcohol back then was nearly as fermented as it is today. Jesus did turn water into wine and it was fermented so since Jesus is the exact image of God we can safely say that alcohol is okay to drink but not in excess.

Most Christians don't say this, but getting drunk wouldn't be so good. After all, even Jesus drank wine according to the bible.

It's not a sin for christians to drink. There are some fundy sects that say it's a sin, but it isn't. The sin would be in abusing alcohol and becoming a drunk. The fundies are trying to keep their congegations from getting tempted, so they tell them its a sin to drink. Just like many fundy groups say its a sin to dance, when plainly, God liked when David danced. Just how these groups try to keep their congregations from any temptation. Obviously, as you can see from the answers, these groups are in the christian minority.

Yes and Jesus was called a "winebibber" by the pharisees, so apparently he drank wine too. It's more of an american (I mean continental, north and south american) that it's a sin, christians in europe drink.

it's a sin to be drunk....not to drink.
Like you said...Jesus turned water into wine. Why would He do that if drinking was a sin?

I'm a Protestant Christian, and I like to have the occasional cocktail, shot, glass of wine, bottle of beer...whatever. I just believe getting drunk is a sin.
