Gaia is the Greek earth goddess.. more details to come..
Gaia is believed by some sources to be the original deity behind the Oracle at Delphi. She passed her powers on to, depending on the source, Poseidon, Apollo or Themis.

Oaths sworn in the name of Gaia, in ancient Greece, were considered the most binding of all.

Etymologically Gaia is a compound word of two elements. *Ge, meaning "Earth" is found in many neologisms, such as Geography (Ge/graphos = writing about Earth) and Geology (Ge/logos = words about the Earth). *Ge is a pre-Greek substrate word that some relate to the Sumerian Ki, also meaning Earth. *Aia is a derivative of an Indo-European stem meaning "Grandmother". The full etymology of Gaia would, therefore, appear to have been "Grandmother Earth" [

In today's environmentalism, she is used as the representative of the earth and how we need to care for her.

I hope this helps. Email me if you need more info.

As Kallan alluded, Gaia has experienced a resurgence in recent years, and lent her name to an environmental hypothesis: that for all practical intents and purposes, the Earth itself acts like a single living organism to regulate its systems. Many ecopagans quite rightly view this as a validation of their core beliefs, but it wasn't meant *quite* as mystically as it's often perceived.

Mother Earth, Mother Nature . . . the ancient Germanic tribes called her Nerthus and her worship is detailed in Tacitus. On the HBO series "Rome," wedding vows included the phrases "Where you are Gaia, I will be Gaius" and "Where you are Gaius, I will be Gaia." Not sure how accurate THAT is. :-)

I know I'm not the person who spoke about this previously, but to my understanding Gaia is the guardian spirit of our planet, and is manifest physically as Earth. The flows of etheric energy (which follow the ley-line grid) are 'controlled' by Gaia, in order to balance the energy on Earth prior to it being released back to the universe.

Gaia is considered to be the sentient spirit of the earth.the idea was first proposed in the late 19th century. I can't recall at the moment who proposed it but i think it might have come from Madam Blatavasky.

Gaia seem to be like the Force, on a planetary basis. It is unprovable, but it makes more sense than a sky fairy.
