Yeast in this context is a symbol for sin. Paul is talking about sin. There was a scandal among the Corinthians about an unlawful relationship, but the church did not do much about it. Paul wrote and warned them take out the leaven among.
leaven or yeast in this context represent sin and evil.
When the season of Passover came, the Jews were not to allow any leaven in their homes, they were not to eat it. They were to get rid of it.
There is passage in the gospels place where Jesus warned his disciples about the leaven or yeast of the Pharisees----When the disciples could not understand what He meant, He explained to them that the leaven or yeast is the false or added manmade teaching of the Pharisees.
There is nothing wrong with leavens or yeast but in these context, Christ and Paul is simply tell the Corinthians and the disciples to REMAIN A PURE BATCH OF DOUGH. The command is to remain pure.
When the left Egypt the land of slavery. They went out in haste and baked their dough without leaven. It is also a memorial of freedom and purity.
The celebration of the Passover and the Feast of Unleaven Bread became combined into one feast. After each passover, the feast of unleavened bread to place for seven days. This would be with a whole week. This week was solemn and demand purity and fellowship.
Paul said to the Corinthian that Christ is their Passover and the they need to be careful to live a pure consecrated life with out the spiritual leaven, since we are freed from sin and have been forgiven. And since He died for the sins of the world.
The number seven is significant also. The feast of unleavened bread took place for seven days. The number seven stands for perfection and completeness. Therefore the Corinthians are warned to be perfect and have no yeast or leaven among them---which means sin in THIS context. He was calling them to a life of consecration and purity as believer professing Christ their Passover on Calvary.
The same message is for us.

So funny that you asked this. They are debating right now on the history channel which came first: Bread or Beer. They are leaning towards beer as the predecessor to beer and bread as a celebrated byproduct to beer production.

Hi Dr. G™. God teaches us about leaven (yeast) in Matthew 16:11-12:
"How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?—but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
Leaven is the doctrine. The Pharisees and Sadducees had turned from the true Gospel and were teaching a Gospel of their own liking. The Gospel they wanted, not the Gospel of God. We see this in many churches today. Some churches pray to statues, other churches speak in tongues, believe in visions and dreams, these are false doctrines God is warning us about. You can see these doctrines on television every day. My advice to anyone who is involved in one of these congregations is to flee them.
