Am I the only one who sees wallpaper borders that are placed up by the ceiling as tacky? I feel this way because it looks like you couldn't cut in with the paint properly so you just put up a border. Also, I have heard that Interior decorators dislike them placed up high too. I went to a model home and they had a border in the middle of the wall with coordinating wallpaper above and below it. I like that, but up near the ceiling yuck!

Coordinating borders, or egg-and-dart, grecian figures, etc. near the ceiling are just fine for Victorian, Edwardian, and Tudor decorating schemes.

What you like--chair rail separating border--just happens to work for more types.

I guess its a case of......To Each Their Own.

I am a paint dept manager at a very large home improvement warehouse...but before I became a manager I worked in the home decor section of the store. We sold and still sell a mountain of borders - off the rack and custom order....to all kinds of people. Those same people will sometimes bring their well chosen borders to the paint department for us to scan in a part of it (the colour they like the most) so that they can coordinate their wall colour with the border.
I do have a couple of rooms with borders up - but my favourite is the room I stenciled a ivy and rose border. In the rooms I have a border up ... two are at the top (which btw has nothing to do with ability to cut in).... and one is a chair rail border.
Borders are not from long ago times .... they are going strong in todays marketplace and seem to be enjoyed by many - young, old and it doesn't seem to be income based either.

I always see them in homes of middle-class suburban homes. I see them advertised in catalogues that are meant for those types of homes. My sister-in-law has them - yuck is right! Of course I was polite and didn't tell her how I really feel.

What I like in a living room and dining room is what my aunt has. The walls were painted. Then at chair-rail level is a slim border of wood with tasteful floral wallpaper below it, coordinated with the color of paint above the wood With the appropriate furniture, it has a very elegant look to it

I had a flowery border in my bedroom in the late 80's. I am happy to say that the only place this wallpaper border now remains is in my memory.

But who really cares what you and interior decorators like or don't like. I like them and it doesn't have anything to do with not being able to cut in with paint properly.
