All shampoo, toothpaste, makeup and liquid items have to be checked and put in a plastic bag separate from your clothing items. You can not bring pocket knives and if you are briging a gun or possible "dangerous item" for hunting or whatever then you have to send that early to the destination.
Also things not to do is wear clothing items that are hard to take off at the checking lines such as lace up shoes, layers of coats, and tons of jewelry. You do not want everyone mad at you.
You can bring portable electronics, books, laptops, paper, magazines, anything that will help you get through those long plane rides. (Also bring your own pillow since airlines have cut down prices and no longer serve them to passengers.)
Remember to have money on you so you can buy those really good cinnamon rolls. Bring headphones too if you want to watch a movie on the plane without spending extra cash.

As far as what you can bring in them avoid anything that could resemble or be used as a weapon those things should be checked, also alcohol is not permitted if you require more information simply check the airline website inwhich you are traveling with

I can tell you what NOT to take. On my last flight a few months ago, they took away a tube of gel for self-tanning. I have had manicure tools confiscated when I forgot they were in my take-on bag. My husband had 2 bottles of tequila taken away. Don't take anything that could be considered dangerous in your carry on, even a bottle of water, liquid makeup. The airlines website will give you more info.

What you CANNOT bring are pointed and sharp objects, firearms etc. As regards liquids, you cannot take bottles/tubes which contain more than 100ml, and in aggregate make more than 1lt. I once had a deodorant taken from me beacuse it had 120ml..so I guess they are pretty strict on this issue.
