I have a painting stuck in my head. It's very famous but for some reason I cannot find the title or artist online.

It depicts a man (from the back) standing on the edge of a cliff facing the ocean. The waves are white and the cliff is rocky. I think the painting was done during the renaissance - I know it is definitely not modern. I also remember studying it in regards to philosophy and romanticism, specifically.

Please help me! The pain of searching to no avail is giving me a headache.

I believe you are thinking of Caspar David Friedrich's painting of 1817-1818 entitled in German "Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer" (and in English "Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog").

One way that might work on a internet framing and poster company you can search for posters by putting in things like subject or size and I have seen a lot of old paintings featured on the site. I think it is the art.com site.

that's going to be really hard. i hope you find it. try searches for marine paintings, ocean paintings, cliffside paintings. also certain regions, like England, have a higher amount of marine paintings, as does the U.S. (think Winslow Homer). good luck.
